🥋 MONDAY MOTIVATION — NOT EVERY SESSION WILL BE YOUR BEST

Some days you walk out of the dojo feeling like everything clicked.

Your techniques felt sharp.
Your kata flowed.
Your timing was right.
You felt like you’d made real progress. 👊

And then there are the other days… 😅

The technique you’ve practised hundreds of times suddenly feels awkward. You forget part of a kata you know. Your balance disappears. Nothing seems to work quite as it should.

Those sessions matter too.

Karate isn’t about being at your best every time you step into the dojo.

It’s about turning up anyway.

🥋 Train when it feels easy.
👊 Train when it feels difficult.
🧠 Learn from the mistakes.
🌱 Accept the frustrating sessions.
➡️ Come back and try again.

Because sometimes the session where you struggle teaches you far more than the session where everything went perfectly.

So if training hasn’t gone quite how you wanted recently, don’t judge your progress by one difficult session.

Turn up. Train. Learn. Return.

That’s how we improve.

🥋 SUNDAY DOJO LAUGH 😂

Karate shouldn’t always be serious… so it’s time for another Katsu-Mi Kai Sunday Dojo Laugh!

This week’s masterpiece… 👇

🥋 What’s a karateka’s favourite type of music?

🎵 Anything with a good KICK to it! 🦵😂

Yep… the standard of comedy remains exactly where you’d expect it to be. 🤣

We’ll keep practising our karate.

The jokes, however, might be beyond help. 😬

Have a fantastic Sunday from everyone at Katsu-Mi Kai! 👊🥋

🥋 SATURDAY KARATE MEMORIES

Do you remember your very first karate lesson?

For some of us, it might have been a few months ago.

For others… we might need to think back a few decades! 😄

But most karateka can remember something about those early days.

Maybe you remember…

🥋 Walking into the dojo for the first time feeling nervous.
⬜ Putting on your first white belt.
👊 Learning your first punch or block.
🧠 Trying desperately to remember which way to turn in your first kata!
😳 Wondering how everyone else seemed to know what they were doing.
😊 Or simply discovering that you couldn’t wait to come back the following week.

No matter what grade we wear today, every single one of us started as a beginner.

So for today’s Saturday Karate Memories, we want to know:

👇 What do YOU remember about your first karate lesson?

Where was it? How old were you? Who was your Sensei? And what made you come back for lesson number two?

Sensei and senior grades especially — we’d love to hear your stories. Some of those first lessons may have been a very long time ago! 😉🥋

Share your memory in the comments. You might even discover someone else remembers the same dojo, instructor or era.

🧠 DID YOU KNOW? — THE DIRTY BELT STORY IS A MYTH 🥋

You may have heard the story…

Karate students supposedly started with a white belt and never washed it. After years of sweat, dirt and hard training, it gradually became darker until eventually it turned black.

It’s a great martial arts story.

But it isn’t how the belt system developed. 😄

The use of coloured belts to represent progress is relatively modern and grew from the kyū/dan grading system associated with Japanese martial arts.

Karate later adopted and developed this approach, with coloured belts providing a visible way of recognising a student’s progression towards black belt.

And here’s another important point…

🥋 A black belt doesn’t mean you’ve finished learning.

For many karateka, reaching black belt is when they realise just how much there still is to learn.

Every belt represents another stage of the same journey.

WHITE BELT → LEARN
COLOURED BELTS → DEVELOP
BLACK BELT → KEEP LEARNING

So unfortunately, keeping your belt dirty for ten years won’t automatically get you a black belt! 😂

Whatever belt you’re wearing today, concentrate on being a little better than you were yesterday.

🐯🥋 LITTLE KARATEKA, BIG LESSONS

When children first walk into a karate dojo, they might be thinking about learning cool moves, earning their next belt or becoming a black belt one day.

But along the way, they’re learning so much more.

🥋 Discipline — listening, practising and trying again.
💪 Confidence — discovering what they’re capable of.
🎯 Focus — learning to concentrate and follow instruction.
🤝 Respect — for their Sensei, their training partners and themselves.
🌱 Resilience — understanding that getting something wrong is part of learning.
😊 Friendship — training, learning and progressing together.

Some weeks they’ll make huge progress. Other weeks something they’ve done a hundred times suddenly won’t go right!

That’s all part of the journey.

At Katsu-Mi Kai, we don’t expect our young karateka to get everything right.

We want them to listen, learn, have a go and keep trying.

Because the lessons children learn in the dojo can stay with them long after training has finished. ❤️🥋

Our junior classes welcome children from 7 years old.

🐯 And I’m sure Tora would approve of this one!

🥋 WEDNESDAY DOJO QUESTION

If you could improve ONE thing about your karate right now, what would it be?

One of the great things about karate is that there is always something to work on.

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve just tied a white belt around your waist for the first time or you’ve been training for decades — none of us ever really finish learning. 🥋

So today we want to hear from you:

👇 If you could improve ONE thing about your karate right now, what would it be?

Maybe it’s…

🥋 Making your stances stronger
👊 Developing more power
⚡ Improving your speed and timing
🧘 Learning to relax during techniques
🧠 Remembering your kata
🥊 Understanding bunkai and application
⚖️ Improving balance and movement
🎯 Or preparing for your next grading

And Sensei and senior grades — you’re not getting out of this one! 😄

What are you currently trying to improve?

Because progressing in karate isn’t about reaching a point where there’s nothing left to learn.

It’s about continuing to find something you can do a little better than yesterday.

Tell us your ONE thing in the comments. 👇

🥋 TUESDAY KARATE KNOWLEDGE — WHY DO WE KIAI?

Most karateka learn very quickly that there are certain moments in kata when we Kiai.

But a Kiai isn’t simply about shouting as loudly as possible. 👊

The word is associated with bringing together Ki (energy/spirit) and Ai (harmony/unification) — and in our karate, the important part is what the Kiai represents.

A good Kiai accompanies commitment to the technique.

🥋 It helps bring the body, breathing and technique together.
💨 It encourages a strong exhalation rather than holding your breath.
👊 It can accompany the moment we deliver power and intent.
🧠 It demonstrates focus, spirit and commitment.
🥊 In practical application, a sudden vocalisation can also have a psychological effect on an opponent.

That’s why a Kiai shouldn’t just be a noise added because we’ve reached a particular point in our kata.

The sound isn’t the technique.

It’s an expression of everything happening within the technique at that moment.

So next time your Sensei tells you to Kiai, don’t just think:

“SHOUT!”

Think:

BREATH. FOCUS. INTENT. COMMITMENT.

And whatever you do… don’t save your quietest Kiai for grading day! 😄🥋

🥋 MONDAY MOTIVATION — PROGRESS ISN’T ALWAYS EASY TO SEE

In karate, it’s easy to notice the things we still can’t do.

The stance that doesn’t quite feel right.
The kata sequence we keep forgetting.
The technique that just won’t flow the way we want it to.

But sometimes we forget to look back at how far we’ve already come.

🥋 The kata you once struggled to remember is now second nature.
👊 The technique you had to think about now happens naturally.
🧠 The things your Sensei once reminded you about constantly are becoming habits.

Progress in karate rarely happens overnight.

It happens through hundreds of small corrections, countless repetitions and simply turning up to train — even on the days when things aren’t quite clicking.

So this Monday, don’t just concentrate on where you want your karate to be.

Take a moment to remember where it started.

Then keep going. 👊

Small improvements become big changes when you give them time.
