Lead guide at Albury, Tony Fox, has this to say about the event that took place on Monday:
The Cancer & Pisces session at Albury, began with expectations being kept firmly in check following the recent spell of very warm weather. The previous day had been spent at another fishery where water temperatures had reached a worrying 23°C, leading many of us to wonder whether the fish would be in the mood for anything other than a leisurely sunbathe.
Fortunately, our concerns proved unfounded. The water temperature at Albury was measured at a much more comfortable 17°C, which was welcome news for both anglers and fish alike.
Twelve Cancer & Pisces Members attended and were soon taken through the formalities before being paired with experienced guides, where requested.
Some members prefer to fish independently, and as always, we try to get everyone fishing as quickly as possible. Albury attracts a wonderfully diverse mix of Members, from complete beginners to more experienced hands, and everyone quickly settled into the relaxed atmosphere.
Albury remains one of the most picturesque fisheries we visit. The lakes looked magnificent, and the surrounding wildlife did not disappoint. A grass snake was spotted meandering casually along one of the paths, seemingly unconcerned by the anglers, while a red kite and a common buzzard provided aerial entertainment overhead. Sadly, the resident kingfisher was elsewhere on important kingfisher business.
As always, plenty of fish could be seen cruising through the crystal-clear water. While watching large fish swim past your fly without the slightest interest can sometimes test an angler's patience, their presence certainly helps keep optimism levels high.
The day officially started at 10 a.m. with all necessary fishing tackle provided. Although several of our regular attendees now bring their own tackle, reflecting the confidence and enthusiasm they have developed through the programme.
The fishing lodge and toilet facilities continue to be a fantastic addition to the venue.
Easy access around the lakes and strategically positioned seating ensure that members can fish comfortably throughout the day, regardless of mobility.
Lunch was served at 1 p.m., providing an opportunity to exchange stories, discuss tactics and, naturally, describe the fish that had escaped. Group photographs followed before everyone returned to the lakes for the afternoon session.
The fish clearly approved of the afternoon conditions, as catches began to increase. By the end of the day, a total of 12 fish had been landed, with several more managing to demonstrate why they are still swimming around Albury waiting to challenge us another day.
Beyond the catches themselves, the day offered Members the chance to immerse themselves in the fishing, enjoy the peaceful surroundings and spend time in the company of fellow anglers. Judging by the smiles, laughter and stories shared at the end of the session, Albury once again delivered a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable day.
