Ask awkward questions.

A decent security company won't mind.

👮 Who supervises the officers?

What happens when somebody phones in sick?

How are officers vetted?

Who do I telephone at 2am?

Will you visit our site beforehand?

How often will management visit?

What happens if an officer isn't suitable?

Will we regularly get the same people?

And importantly: what happens when something goes wrong?

Don't be dazzled by brochures, badges and promises.

You're buying a service delivered by people, often when nobody else is around.

You need confidence in those people and the company behind them.

Everyone has a budget.

We understand that.

💷 But security isn't something you want to discover you've bought badly after an incident.

Saving £1 an hour sounds attractive until officers regularly arrive late, shifts aren't covered, uniforms are poor, nobody answers the telephone and you're constantly explaining the same instructions to another new face.

Cheap security can become expensive management.

There's nothing wrong with asking suppliers to justify their price. In fact, you should.

But compare what you're actually receiving rather than simply looking at the number at the bottom.

There's no sensible single answer.

The cost depends on the hours, location, duties, responsibilities, required experience, and whether you're asking for days, nights, weekends, and/or Bank Holidays.

💷 But one thing is worth remembering: the hourly price isn't the security officer's wage.

The supplier still has wages, holiday pay, National Insurance, pension contributions, insurance, uniforms, recruitment, training, supervision, administration and cover to think about.

A suspiciously cheap hourly rate usually means something somewhere is being squeezed, and quite often, that's the person standing on your gate at 3 am.

𝟮. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝟭𝟮-𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁?

A twelve-hour security shift is a long time.

But you're paying for twelve hours of security, not two hours of work spread across a twelve-hour period.

👀 Depending on the site, an officer could be controlling access, checking vehicles, completing patrols, watching vulnerable areas, checking doors and gates, dealing with visitors, recording incidents and simply noticing when something doesn't look right.

There will naturally be quieter periods, and that's normal.

But quiet doesn't mean switched off.

A good officer remains alert because incidents rarely announce when they're incoming.

🤔 So if that's what you're expecting from an officer, how much should you realistically expect to pay for one?

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗱?

For licensable security work, checking an SIA licence should be basic housekeeping.

🪪 Don't simply assume the company has checked it.

Look at the licence.

Check the photograph.

Check the expiry date.

Check that the licence covers the work they're actually carrying out.

Professional suppliers should already have systems for checking their officers, but clients shouldn't feel uncomfortable asking either.

You're allowing somebody responsibility for your premises, customers, employees or property.

Asking whether they're properly licensed isn't insulting.

It's sensible.

A uniform doesn't automatically make somebody a security professional.

Not every business needs a security guard, and this is worth saying from the start.

👮 Sometimes better lighting, locks, CCTV, fencing or simply changing a working practice can solve the concern.

But if you've got people coming and going, valuable equipment, an empty site overnight, previous thefts, unwanted visitors or staff working alone, having someone physically there can make a considerable difference.

A good security compan𝘆 shouldn't immediately tell you that you need three guards and a twelve-month contract, but they should first understand your concerns.

Security should have a purpose, not just simply fill a chair.
