This year, rather than arranging our usual programme of friendly matches with neighbouring clubs, we decided to try something a little different by bringing everyone together for an American Tournament. Teams from Marlborough, Swindon and Wanborough joined us at Ramsbury today, and the afternoon proved to be a great success.
The format was new to many of the players, but with a little guidance from our members, everyone quickly got the hang of it. Before long, the green was full of friendly competition, good bowling and plenty of banter.
There were some excellent performances throughout the afternoon, with the race for the top individual score remaining close. In the end, honours were shared by our own Glen Aylett and Swindon’s Russell Beint, who both finished on 92 points. Close behind was Gordon Perry from Marlborough with an impressive 90 points.
The team honours went to Wanborough, whose combined score of 460 points secured them first place.
Judging by the positive feedback and the smiles at the end of the day, the new format was a hit. We’ll be doing it all again on 19 July, when we look forward to welcoming back some of today’s teams, along with a couple of new faces, for another enjoyable afternoon of bowls, tea and cakes.
