Navigation and Map Reading are fast becoming lost skills in an age where GPS and smartphones do most of the work for us. However, technology can fail, batteries can die, and signal can disappear—especially in the outdoors. Knowing how to read a map gives you confidence, independence, and a much deeper understanding of the landscape around you.
Understanding contour lines helps you visualise the shape of the land, from steep climbs to gentle valleys, while learning Ordnance Survey map symbols allows you to identify paths, landmarks, boundaries, and hazards before you even set foot outside. These skills are essential for safe and enjoyable walking, hiking, and outdoor adventures.
On this one-day workshop, you will learn how to set and orient a map, take and understand grid references, judge distance and timing, and use a compass effectively. By the end of the day, you’ll have the practical skills and confidence to navigate accurately without relying on GPS—opening up the outdoors in a whole new way.
