We have a confirmed case of strangles on our yard. Markyate, Hertfordshire

Please read the following:

We had a new horse arrive on our yard, which was also a new horse for the owner and was purchased from a couple of hours away. As with all our horses that come to our yard we have them all strangles tested before they arrive. This horse had a blood test, and a guttural pouch test which came back as negative. The horse was checked with its microchip against its passport to ensure testing the correct horse was done. It then arrived at our yard 48hrs later. A couple of days later it had nasal discharge, but no temperature or any other signs of illness. we contacted the vet who came out and confirmed she had no temperature, no raised glands and no other signs of it being Strangles. But advised like with any horse to blood test to see what was going on.

I would like to add that he advised it was highly unlikely that it was strangles due to having the guttural pouch test coming back as negative.
However we have kept the horse on box rest until the results came back just in case. On Friday it came back as confirmed with strangles, which the vet has said was less than a 1% chance of this happening.

Unfortunately even with putting all the correct protocols in place this horrible virus has still come on the yard. We are awaiting results back from our other horses, and put all the necessary biosecurity in place to ensure the disease is not spread, and we pray that none of the other horses come down with it.

We would like to add that all instructors/farriers/vets who have been at the yard recently have been notified and they won't be entering the yard until all test results are back. Our last clinic was in September before this horse arrived at our yard and there have been none since.
