'Twas good to be back out on two wheels again over the Easter weekend. The weather was less than perfect, but I've certainly experienced worse!
Saturday practice and qualifying was spent bedding in new tyres, leathers and a front brake disc, and generally reacquainting myself with a bike and track again. Lap times were head scratchingly up and down over the four sessions, but weren't a million miles off my times from last year so I was reasonably happy (πŸ€₯).
I was surprised to wake up still in the paddock Sunday morning, with the caravan taking a battering from Storm Dave overnight - I wasn't exactly feeling refreshed and recharged before heading out for a few warm up laps!
With the gorgeous new DRC Race Leathers loosening up a little, I felt more comfortable on the bike and had a steady couple of races, chasing for 4th in class in the first race and getting a surprising 3rd in class in the second, having had a lonely ride round πŸ₯‰
With a bit of a wait now until my next outing with BMB, I definitely need to get some testing in and maybe an outing or two at the Stretton summer series to try and pick up a bit more pace!

British Mini Bikes Championship Round 3 Rowrah 15th June - after the best part of two months since the last round (due to a mystery pencilled in round coming to nought, due to the track at (cough) Silverstone not being completed in time), we made the epic trip up to the lake district for the second time this year to Rowrah.

Having ignored the weather forecast all week, I finally gave in and fitted my wet tyres on Friday night, as there was no miraculous change to the rain that was due. I was about to finally experience the peculiar microclimate that many fellow riders have told me that Rowrah experiences, as everywhere else around the country seemed to be reporting glorious weather!

Saturday morning practise was delayed - a thunderstorm appeared directly overhead and flooded the circuit. We ended up losing the entire first session due to this, and finally got going late morning.
I had a wobble around, reacquainting myself with the full wet tyres again after a couple of years.
Keeping an eye on the weather, I changed to inters for Q1 and had a much more enjoyable ride round. After a few laps, there were a few spots of rain so I decided to pull in early, knowing I wasn't going to post a faster time on an increasingly greasy track. It was fully wet for Q2, so I didn't even bother going out, as I would not be beating my fastest lap from earlier in the day.

Sunday started out a lot brighter. The track was damp, but drying, so I decided to miss the morning warm up as I couldn't be bothered to change my tyres!
Race 1 - I had a fairly decent start, and made up a few places I then spent most of the race chasing Dean Bednarek, who was obviously a little rusty as is usually much quicker on his mini gp bike. He towed me round to my best time of the weekend, but sadly my plans of trying a last lap overtake were dashed when I was dive bombed myself, losing my rhythm and 3 places. I managed to get one of them back before the flag and finished 6th in the Vets class.
Sadly, this was the only dry race of the day for me - despite my weather app telling me no rain was due to fall, it didn't seem to take into account that clouds are wet, and we were high enough up/the clouds were low enough down, and everything got wet again.
So, back on the full wet tyres for Race 2, I had another good start and settled in to a comfortable pace. I thought I was doing enough to maybe get on the podium, but with a lap to go Pete Johson came flying by me. Any hopes of trying to re-take the position were dashed when a remounted rider decided to cut right across the racing line just after Pete had passed him. However, I was pleased to have finished in 4th place when I checked the results afterwards.
Race 3 - feeling thoroughly wet and miserable, I forced myself back out on track for the final time of the weekend. Whilst conditions weren't ideal, it was a long way to go to then not go out, and I couldn't have got any wetter than I already was! Third decent start of the weekend, I picked up a few places but then the race was red flagged due to a faller requiring attention. Fortunately, I think it turned out they were 'only' winded, so the race was soon underway again. Of course, I had my worst start of the weekend, but recovered and found a steady pace. I was rewarded for my perseverance by managing to nab third place on the line from Mike Carr, whose visor had misted up.
All things considered, a decent weekend despite the weather - it's always good to catch up with the racing family!

Looking forward now to the next meeting at Three Sisters, where the bike will be sporting a refreshed look!

Many thanks to Helmet City.co.uk Ltd for supplying a perfectly clear visor, and great to see BMB Snap Shots again after illness at the previous round at Teeside

TBT to my favourite meeting from last year - both races a tactical slipstream battle from start to finish.
Counting down the days to the first round of the 2025 series at Rowrah in March.
I just need to get a days testing in beforehand to fine tune the tweaks I've made over the winter!

British Mini Bikes Championship Round 6 Red Lodge 30th September - somehow we've already reached the final round of the year - time flies when you're having fun and all that!
Back to a track I'd only been to the once previously - technical, tight and twisty with few overtaking opportunities. Saturday practice went well, and I felt on the pace and comfortable, albeit with one shortened session following a snapped throttle cable! However, Sunday was a different matter completely and I ended the season with a bit of a whimper as I just couldn't get myself going. I had a great start in Race 1, but had a bit of a moment when I somehow got my glove stuck in the hand guard and had the throttle open whilst trying to brake, which resulted in me stalling and letting everyone by. I got restarted and made up a few places, but the race got cut short by a red flag, so I finished 14th 160, 6th Vet.
I was still in a bit of a funk come Race 2 and was circulating at least a second slower than the day before, finishing 13th 160, 6th Vet.
Sadly, the days activities came to a premature halt following a nasty fall in one of the junior classes - fortunately the riders are ok and have escaped serious injury.
Whilst unremarkable in terms of performance, the two finishes were enough to consolidate 3rd in the 160 championship and 4th in the vets championship. Something I'm incredibly proud of considering the pace of the riders on the grid!
I would say the 2025 season can't come soon enough as there are rumours about some pretty tasty tracks being involved, but I do need to eke out some more speed from the bike for next year and have a few things in mind.
Many thanks for the support received this year from

British Mini Bikes Championship Round 5 Whilton Mill 31st August/1st September - This weekend was a 'double header', with full days of racing on the Saturday & Sunday after practice/qualifying on the Friday.
The weather was kind, and the threat of rain on the Sunday fortunately didn't turn up. Whilton is not a pleasant track to ride with the slightest hint of moisture!
Being there or thereabouts pace wise, I had 6 really good races, and it was also great to be battling with some mates making 'guest' appearances from their usual 140 class. I think it's fair to say I was 'blowing' a bit Sunday afternoon though.
So, results wise -
Race 1 6th 160 3rd Vet
Race 2 6th 160 3rd Vet
Race 3 11th 160 4th Vet
Rave 4 6th 160 4th Vet
Race 5 9th 160 5th Vet
Race 6 8th 160 4th Vet
So, I've been overhauled in the Vets championship, sitting in 4th place, but the points picked up in the 160 class have gone a long way to secure 3rd spot - although the next round at Red Lodge happens to be a favourite of Dave's, who's hot on my heels!
This weekend was also the first time out in the lovely new motor, picked up from the extremely helpful guys at Oadby Van Centre. Dale and Ronnie really looked after me, so if anyone's in need of a new van, please give them a look!
Thanks as always for the support received from Helmet City.co.uk Ltd, and for the cracking photos taken by BMB Snap Shots

British Mini Bikes Championship Round 4 Three Sisters 10th August - It was nice to get back to a 'local' track, only 130 miles away 😜 although getting there was eventful when the exit for the A50 off the M1 was shut due to an RTA. 3 hours wasn't too bad a journey though. And it's always a welcome sight to turn up and find there's a spot in the paddock next to my northern fam!
I did my usual pootling around in practise/qualifying- certainly no where near the pace I was on at Pembrey! With a slight increase in entries for this meeting I ended up 10th on the grid for the first race.
With an ever changing weather forecast, the racing on Saturday started with on/off drizzle. The track was drying pretty quickly though, as it was still warm. I made the decision so put in an intermediate front for Race 1. After a blinding start, I found myself chasing 2nd place in the Vets class (4th overall?). However, my confidence got the better of me, I clipped the edge of the track and went down. I managed to remount and nursed it home with a bent gear lever to finish 7th in class, 11th overall.
Determined to make up for my error in Race 1, I got another good start in Race 2 - however, my ambition outweighed my talent when I tried to win the race at the first real corner, and I rather embarrassingly went ploughing into another rider, causing us both to crash. What a prat. I remounted and finished 6th in class, 11th overall.
After that humbling experience, I made sure I didn't do anything stupid in the last race, and had the best ride of the weekend, finishing 5th in class, 7th overall.
Fortunately, I managed to keep my head away from the tarmac during both crashes, so I won't need to bother Helmet City Race Support again just yet 😁
Photos taken by the ever excellent BMB Snap Shots.
I also need to mention Practical Car & Van Rental for providing me with a lovely Mercedes Sprinter - I can see why they're such a popular van! Fingers crossed I'll have another van of my own when we get to Whilton Mill in a few weeks! With only two rounds left, things are really hotting up in the championships, so I really need to be on my best form to finish as strong as possible!
Sadly no onboard footage from this round - I forgot to put the camera in for the first race, forgot to switch it on in the second, and thought I'd be better off keeping things as simple as possible for the last race. Sorry!

British Mini Bikes Championship Round 3 Pembrey 30th June - I was looking forward to this one. It's a track I've raced at many times, and is fast and furious (although, being mechanically sympathetic I was a little bit nervous about my bike blowing itself to smithereens!) The facilities are also great, and there's plenty of room to park.
Practise on Saturday morning was pretty uneventful - in fact it was actually quite boring! I was circulating on my own, and the straights felt that long, I was considering taking a paper to read in the next session! However, I was pleasantly surprised to come in topping the time sheet!
I was feeling smug when I repeated this in the next session, which was a bit more exciting as there was a pack of us playing around. I was pretty confident going into qualifying, and came in pretty happy as had got to the front of the group I was in - that was short lived though, when I realised I'd effectively towed round everyone else to faster lap times, and I ended up 5th πŸ˜‚ However, there were fractions in it, so I was very much looking forward to Sunday's racing
We had only had two races, but what an amazing couple of races they were.
Entries were surprising low, so the bulk of the field were fighting it out in the Vets championship, as the only entry in the 160 class cleared off and left us to it! Any one of us was in with the chance to win, and it was great to see that the battles were captured on the live feed (I'll add the link to the races, plus links to my onboard video in the comments).
I was left kicking myself when my exuberance got the better of me in the first race, as I made a move for the lead too soon on the last lap, lost time, and subsequently narrowly got pushed back to 3rd. Another hard fought 3rd was the result in the second race too.
The results didn't really matter though, the fun we had on track, and the laughs we have about it afterwards in the paddock, is why we go racing!
Fair play to BMB Snap Shots for grabbing some great photos - the downside from a spectator point of view was having to walk a lot further to get round the track to a decent vantage point compared to most of the tracks we attend!
Thanks again to Helmet City Race Support, and also a special mention for my eldest daughter, Bella, who at the last minute decided she would come along and keep me company! You can just about make her out in the last photo, as has decided to become camera shy 🀭
Sadly, this trip has turned out to be the last one for my trusty old van, as she has since failed the MOT rather spectularly, so I'm on the lookout for a newer one! I'm on a budget, so if anyone knows of one going for mates rates, drop me a message!

British Mini Bikes Championship Round 2 Rowrah 12th May
First time at this track and I can see why so many people rave about it. Set in an old stone quarry, the track has ups and downs and is fast and flowing.
So, Saturday practice and qualifying was spent getting acquainted with the track (need to thank Pitbikesonic for his trackguide, which came in very handy!).
First practice was eventful as a load of oil was dumped, with several riders going down. I was fortunate to avoid a crash myself when the rear end came round on me on the fast left hander at the back of the circuit. The remaining sessions were pretty uneventful, so I spent them chipping away at my lap times, settling down to consistent 58 second laps.
Raceday on Sunday and the weather continued to be kind - the only rain forecast was later in the day, after racing was due to finish.
I certainly seem to have got the hang of getting the bike off the line now, as made 3 decent starts, and was able to get pulled round by the quicker guys in front - which resulted in knocking a further second off my fastest lap time.
In terms of results, I finished 10th, 9th and 8th (6th, 5th and 5th in the Vets class), so still a bit to do to try and stay with the guys at the front.
Great piccies again from BMB Snap Shots, I'm particularly enjoying the retro Honda leathers formation flying with Tony Reveley
Next round is Pembrey on 29th/30th June - the track has been shortened a little to try and reduce the number of engines being blown up, but I'm looking forward to racing round there again, as it has been a few years since my last venture that way!

Rowrah is one of the few tracks I haven't been to - it's always nice to tick another track off my 'raced at' list, and I've only seen good things said about this one - and dare I say it, the forecast is looking good too! (Better make sure I pack the tinted visor this time! 🀦🏽)
