🤷♂️ Ben first came to me for rehab post surgery after a disc herniation (surgery was needed as he had no feeling waist down)
🏋️Lifting heavy or spinal flexion done gradually and progressively aren't major risk factor for disc herniations contrary to incorrect beliefs.
⚠️Disk herniations are multifactorial. Risk factors include; being sedentary, poor load management, poor occupational load management (cumulative working period >8 h & stress at work etc based on current best evidence), poor nutrition, smoking, obesity/bmi etc.
‼️The biggest risk factor appears to be genetics.
🏃Some things we can influence, others we can't.
💥"Genetics etc may load the gun, but lifestyle choices pull the trigger"
🛌The spine isn't made out of glass and can and should be loaded progressively.
🤕Excessive rest and avoidance is harmful and negatively affects prognosis and outcome and can further increase disability. You need a better team if you've been given that advice.
🏋️Load it or lose it. Even in rehabilitation exercises selection needs to be challenging to illicit positive adaptation of the tissue. Yes the spinal tissues ALL adapt to loading.
📈Regular physical exercise is a preventive factor against the occurrence of disc herniation and degeneration.
⛳Whilst Caudia equina is indeed a red flag condition that requires immediate medical attention, the above rehabilitation protocols still apply with exercise, even post surgery.
😓Don't be a passive participant in a pathetic process.
