On Sunday the lions faced one of the longest away trips of the season and even though we were missing some players through illness and injuries we where hoping the team would turn up ready from minute one and we are pleased to say we got that and then some. Their attitude, relentlessness and determination not to be beaten shone through even when it became a bit scrappy. Again we can praise the defensive display even with changes to the back line and the midfield was much better to create chances for the attacking players to convert.

Lion of the match was awarded to Vaughn! He did exactly what he needed to do as the lions striker, making himself a real problem for the defenders and encouraging his team mates though-out the match.

Mother’s day and what could be more rewarding for the lovely women in our lives than to be standing in a windy field early in the morning.

If they were hoping to be treated to a special performance I don’t think the first half was what they had in mind. Again we started sluggish and slow, second to everything and struggled to make a successful pass and deservedly found ourselves 2-0 down at the break.

After a talking to at half time with clear instructions to restart and play, they did just that. By playing good football, challenging and asking questions of their opposition, we managed to turn the game on its head and with a very vocal backing of the mums from the sidelines the lions managed to fight back to take all 3 points.

It just goes to show how good we can be when we want it but again we make it harder than it needs to be.

Lion of the match was awarded to Oli! He took on board the instructions given to him at half time and absolutely put himself everywhere. He was aggressive on the ball, tracking back when needed and scoring when the chance came. With one being a great headed goal! ⚽️⚽️⚽️

Friendly 🦁

Last weekend we found ourselves without a league game but luckily the opportunity to host a friendly came along.

Hoping to continue the feel good momentum we created the week before and with more players available the lions got themselves stuck in.

We dominated for large amounts of the game and defensively had one of the best performances in a long time, soaking up everything that came their way. We tinkered with players positions and we were really pleased with the attitude towards this from everyone, swapping positions and getting on with the task at hand with no complaints, just happy to play.

Another great team performance and some good goals scored to take into this week’s game.

Lion of the match was awarded to Jamarrio. He played in defence, out wide and in the centre of midfield and never looked out of place. Delivering some dangerous crosses into the box for his team mates and always looking to cause a problem for the oppositions defence.

Last Sundays match was a cup game against a team two divisions higher than ourselves and in impressive form but by all accounts you wouldn’t have known that based on our performance, each and every lion on the field stood up and showed real character and togetherness to take it to the wire.

With no subs we were asking a lot of the lions, they matched the energy of our opponents and even with little niggles picked up and when they were just running on fumes no one stoped.

At full time their coach’s made a point of coming over and speaking to the team on how well they had just preformed, we were all so proud of every single one of them and I hope they can see how impressive it was and take that into the rest of the season.

Lion of the match was awarded to Adam. From minute one he had to be on his toes against a very skilful winger. He stuck to his task of holding the line as a unit with the other defender but also made sure his opposite number didn’t have the time or space to play.

10 lions! 🦁

For yesterday’s game the lions found themselves short on numbers due to illnesses and injuries. Togetherness was key and to have each others back if the disadvantage started to affect the game. We definitely got that yesterday and the lions should be proud of the work rate shown against a really strong team. We didn’t have a lot of possession through the game and a lot of the lions creativity had to come from the hard work at the back and effective counter attacking football on the break, when we had the chance we played some really good football to break the lines on a really testing pitch.

We now have some time to get our injured players back up and running again, ready for the next run of games.

Lion of the match was awarded to Daniel. Standing in as the lions keeper he pulled off a number of important saves, throwing his body on the line and even saving a low shot from the penalty spot, deservedly drawing praise from the oppositions managers and players on how well he performed.

Sleepy start 💤

We’ve been very guilty in the past of looking very lethargic in the warm up and not switched on when the whistle blows, Sunday was one of those days and it was probably one of the worst first halves we have put in for a long time which meant we found ourselves deservedly behind at the break.

Luckily after a good half time talk the lions where a completely different team, they took the game to the opponent, asked questions and got their reward to take home our first point of the season.

Hopefully the lions learn from games like this as it could be the difference between gaining a promotion or staying in our current league.

Lion of the match was awarded to Oli.
He has overcome a lot these past couple of weeks but you wouldn’t have known that watching him on the pitch. He ran at everything that came his way, made himself a real headache for their defence and was involved in both goals.

First game back after the new year.

After a long spell with no games over Christmas and battling the bad weather it felt good to finally have a league fixture go ahead. A real tough test today for the lions against a new opponent that had recently come down from the second division. We couldn’t fault the effort shown by the lions but we we’re a little rusty and we missed a little bit of composition on the ball but it’s to be expected after such a long time off. On to the next game and we’ll build on what we did well today ⚽️🦁

He was fearless at times with his defensive display today and very busy in the first half but he took it all in his stride. We can really see how hard he works each week and the improvement he’s made since joining the lions.

Winner takes all.

Today was a massive opportunity for the lions to put all their hard work for the season into a final 70 minutes and after the last games energy levels, why wouldn’t we go into this game thinking we can do it.

We didn’t get the first half performance that was expected or one that could be accepted from a team who have pushed themselves all season. We had too many players not brave enough to stand up to the test, not willing to put in the hard yards, caught ball watching or just looked tired. Deservedly we found ourselves behind at the break with a real up hill battle on our hands.

The lions took on the words said at half time and tried to set things right. They were aggressive, direct and picking up 2nd balls, the pressure paid off, dragging themselves level on two occasions and that’s the way the game looked like it would finish. Unfortunately a lack of concentration late in the game let in a counter attack and ultimately ended all hope of a comeback with little time remaining.

That’s the way it goes sometimes and we said to the lions after the game that if they’re not switched on from the start these things easily happen and it’s too much to overcome but we learn, we grow and we move on as a team. 🦁⚽️🔵🟠

Today’s lion of the match was awarded to Bentley 🏆

He battled to win every ball played forward to him even if he was second favourite and never let his head drop. His hard work payed off scoring a goal and winning a penalty for the lions. 👏

Fought tooth and nail.

We would like to start this by saying how proud of the lions we are. Going into such a high pressured game knowing what was on the line and every player made sure they did their bit to give us every chance of success and it shows how much of a close knit team we have become over the seasons.

I think everyone on the side lines could see that for the whole 70 minutes the lions were the team on top and created the most chances to win the game but football is a funny old game.

Today didn’t go the way we dreamt but we still stand in a strong position for promotion and the lions can hold their heads high and say they did their best.

It’s been a couple of weeks since the lions were last in action and today we played a friendly against a team a league above, a great test and a little peak of what we could be up against in the future.

Early exchanges definitely showed the lions were a little rusty and off their usual pace but as the game went on flashes of individual skills shone through and link ups started to form but as a team we often lacked the belief or desire to win a challenge, resulting in pressure being put on the defence to try and sort it out on their own. We had a full team present though and good minutes in their legs ready for a massive game next weekend.

From minute one he was alert and lively, breaking down play, winning everything that came his way and driving forward from the back into some dangerous positions. Giving 100% as always 👏

A tough test yesterday.

This weekends fixture may have been a friendly but if the lions wanted a taste of the next level up this was definitely it.

We started the game with the wind behind us and attacking down hill but we never really capitalised on this, finding it hard to settle into a rhythm and panicking under a well drilled press team. When we did create good scoring chances, luck wasn’t on our side but the lions battled hard and kept the score respectful given some of the oppositions recent league results.

So we dust ourselves down and look to next week 🦁⚽️

Yesterdays lion of the match was awarded to Joe. He battled to the end, never backing out of a challenge in the middle of the lions defence and trying to rally the lads around him with his positivity when things weren’t going our way.
