Executive summary

Hundreds of Manchester United supporters have been caught up in the Club’s mass ticketing sanctions exercise. Fans support strong action against genuine touts, but MUST has serious concerns about the use of suspicious digital behaviour as evidence of wrongdoing, the lack of advance consultation, and the fairness and proportionality of the process.

Key points

Suspicion is not proof: unusual account activity should trigger investigation, not automatically justify a finding of touting or the loss of a Season Ticket.

MUST challenged the process throughout: we repeatedly asked the Club to pause, proposed alternative safeguards and spent hundreds of hours helping individual supporters and pressing for cases to be reconsidered.

Individual representation mattered: our provisional tracking suggests only around one in five appealed cases were ultimately upheld in full, with most resulting in overturns, warnings or lesser sanctions.

We stayed engaged because walking away would not have stopped the process: it would simply have left affected supporters with less help and less organised supporter challenge.

Further action remains available: MUST is supporting the IFO route, taking advice on potential legal challenges and considering the role of the Independent Football Regulator.

The Club must now rebuild trust: Manchester United needs to demonstrate what it has learned and ensure genuine supporter consultation before any comparable exercise is undertaken again.

Although I have told this story before, today is a little different. As many of you know, I was contacted by the family of Tom Tyrrell a few years ago. They entrusted me with his archive, and hoped his work would find a new audience. Over time I’ve been working on that.

Today is a significant day in that journey as a lost interview with Sir Matt Busby, unheard since 1979, is released for the first time. I decided now is the right time, with the 80th anniversary of Busby taking control of his first league match occurring on Monday. I wanted everyone to hear this extraordinary interview as Sir Matt recounts the early days of him deciding to take the job at Old Trafford.

The interview is already available now, on United Unheard, wherever you get your podcasts. If that wasn’t enough I’ve included another unheard Busby interview from a little later.

I know you’ll love it. Being able to share these things is an immense privilege and I thank Tom’s family for it as it makes me feel so much closer to the club we all love.
