How many of these have you heard me say? 🤔
I’m not repeating myself for the sake of it! I sprinkle these into most of my classes, and here’s why…
1) This isn’t just a variation on ‘root to rise’. it’s my little protest to a spiritual/ yogi world I’ve seen and don’t want to fall into to. It’s starts with being down to earth, grounded, and safe.
Spiritually, root chakra work comes first. You need to be grounded before you rush ahead to ‘open the heart’ and ‘see through the third eye’. If your feet aren’t planted firmly on the ground, your spend your life floating around reality.
Physically, you need strong foundations, strength, before you move into fluid and playful shapes to avoid injury.
Psychologically, you need to feel safe and secure before your explore something new. It’s even been found that those with the most secure primary attachment, are the most adventurous!
2) In Yang-like flows we’re engaging the muscles, to protect the ligaments and joints. We’re building strength. In Yin-like static poses, the focus changes a little, and we want to feel as though we can release the engagement in the muscles to move the stretch deeper into the ligaments and joints. We’re building length. And to do that, we need to be able to notice where we’re holding on, engaging, and where we can soften and release.
On a deeper level- and the basis of meditations like yoga Nidra - the more we can relax the deeper into ourselves we go. The deeper into our layers of consciousness, to our most truest self. It’s where our intuition speaks and are deepest desires and core values are most apparent. And how do we get to those? By relaxing! See: the more we relax, the deeper we go.
3) We do often directing our body, thinking first and using it as a tool to complete something. The problem with that is that we get so in our heads, the wisdom of the gets completely ignored.
On a practical level, we get injured or we don’t give ourselves what we need. On an emotional and spiritual level, we lose sense of ourselves.
During a class I’ll often invite you to tap into some intuitive movement, trying not to think about it too much, letting the body lead.
Part 2 to come!
