Motobu Naoki is a leading researcher of karate history. His particular interest is looking into the Okinawan roots of karate but he has covered a lot of ground of interest to Wadoryu karateka too. A lot of his work is behind a paywall but here is one he has put up for free access.

Continuing the theme of recent posts about leading Japanese Wadoryu competitors, in 1989, the 1st Wado World Cup was held in London. Among the Japanese team were former WKF World Champions Kondo Eizo (1986, -65kg) and Hayashi Ko (1988 - 75kg, 1992 - openweight).

At this 1989 event though, Kawano Katsuyuki won the open weight division, with the Japan winning the team event in the final against Italy.

Some highlights from the 1983 All Japan Championships. Wadokai Murase Hisao and Nishimura Seiji both have matches against then JKA Kagawa Masao. In the final match, Wadokai Suzuki Yuichi (Tokai) wins the match against Nishimura Seiji.

According to an article in Hiden magazine (2020/3), this was truly the era of the Wadoryu competitors dominating the scene. Murase Hisao and Suzuki Yuichi each had distinctive kumite movement. The article says that karate competition style can be divided into the era before and after Suzuki Yuichi because Suzuki introduced this stepping style movement and keeping at longer range, compared to the previous era competitors who worked from a more solid stance.

Another famous competitor on this film is the 4x world kata champion Nakayama Mie. In the background among the officials and coaches are Yanigida sensei and Takagi sensei as well as two of the Tanabe brothers.
