Drowning Prevention Week is a powerful reminder that water safety is a life skill everyone should have. 💙

Learning to swim isn’t just about fun days at the pool or beach—it can save lives. Every year, preventable drowning incidents affect families and communities, but many of these tragedies can be avoided through education, awareness, and confidence in the water.

Teaching children (and adults!) how to swim, understand water risks, and stay calm in emergencies makes a real difference. It’s never too early—or too late—to learn.

Let’s work together to build safer communities by prioritizing swimming skills and water safety knowledge.

Always follow the Water Safety Code:

💦Stop and think
Take time to assess your surroundings. Look for the dangers and always research local signs and advice.

💦Stay together
When around water always go with friends or family. Swim at a lifeguarded venue.

🚨In an emergency

📱 Call 999
If you are at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Don’t enter the water to rescue.

🤽 Float
Fall in or become tired - stay calm, float on your back and call for help. Throw something that floats to somebody that has fallen in.

We’re proud to be taking part in with Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK 💙

From 13-20 June 2026, we’ll be supporting vital water safety education to help children and young people stay safe around water this summer.

Together, we can empower communities to enjoy water safely and confidently.

During this week, all school swimming and swim school lessons across our swimming pools and outdoor centres, will incorporate lifesaving-focused activities, ensuring that pupils develop essential water safety knowledge alongside their swimming ability.

Lessons will be adapted to include practical, age-appropriate activities, helping all pupils gain critical lifesaving skills and stay safe in and around water.

Swim wild. Feel free. Step into the blue for a swim like no other!

Starting from Tuesday 9th June, competent swimmers aged 16+ can now enjoy Open Water Swimming at Debdale Outdoor Centre

Open Water Swimming sessions are the perfect way to boost your mood, take on a challenge and feel truly free as you move. You can take the plunge, reach new limits and build confidence and resilience that lasts beyond the water.

Whether you fancy an escape from your day to day, a dip in nature or to train for a triathlon – the open water is ready and waiting for you.

• £8 for Manchester residents with a pay as you go membership, or monthly or annual Better members
• £10.50 for non members

Sessions are 1 hour long and must be pre-booked:

📅Tuesday - 5pm to 8pm
📅Thursday - 5pm to 8pm
📅Sunday - 9am to 12noon
