With the recent withdrawal of support for St Helens Pride by the local council we wanted to say a few things about the community that’s out there for LGBT+ people in our region.
In terms of national news this might seem fairly small. But it serves as an indicator of an increasing withdrawal of support for LGBT+ events, and people, by elected bodies. Headlines are worrying, but where support from politicians fails, community steps up.
Whether it’s Pride events or community clubs and organisations, know that we’re here across the country. And they are powered by great people, often working on tiny budgets. Go and support your small local Prides in the region, and come along to Manchester Pride as well!
Also in the North West, whether it’s St Helens, Bolton or Blackburn, it can be hard finding q***r friends and community outside the big cities. If it’s difficult, know that we’re just a few miles down the road for a kick about and a laugh. Or if you’re closer to Liverpool, drop our friends at Mersey Marauders FC a line.
In turn, the comments made by the St Helens council leader which whip up further societal distrust of trans people are a reminder that it’s a worrying time for our trans friends. Be keener to stand up for them as they go about their lives. We have numerous trans members and they are all amazing. They, and you, will always be welcome here 🏳️⚧️
