As Dad’s, this is one of the main things we take for granted when it comes to nutrition 👇

We all have one thing in common

We’re foodies

Food brings us together, at the dinner table, or the centre piece of a family celebration

Food is one of the things we have to consider when we take the kids for a day out of a weekend

And food is often our go-to distraction or source of gratification when we’re overwhelmed, oversubscribed or even (unknowingly) stressed

But where have our nutritional behaviours originated from?

We don’t have cctv cameras inside of the homes of others… we don’t really know how others live behind closed doors

Yes, we might try new things every once in a while. Perhaps these new things stick, and turn into lasting behaviours

But the primary influence is our upbringing. Our childhood

The first one that springs to my mind is how we never, ever had fizzy drinks in the house. So my sisters and I drank nothing but cordial / juice, milk, or water. That’s stayed with me into adulthood and is the same for my kids.

We take what we do for granted

The foods we eat. The way we shop. Whether we do / do not have dessert after dinner. Every choice we make.

We take it for granted because we normalise whatever is familiar

Familiar is comfortable

Whereas change is not

I think a lot of parents fall into the trap of trying to do good by their children through enforcement

But enforcement doesn’t work… least not in the medium to long term

Why?

Because the behaviours we’re trying to encourage out of our kids have (more than likely) originated from us!!

We just don’t realise it… because what’s normalised often goes unnoticed

It’s our job to lead by example

And that can only be done through our actions and behaviours

Yes, it’s hard

It’s hard because it requires change. It requires us to break a potentially life-long cycle of behaviours

And change is uncomfortable

But we’re not just doing it for ourselves. We’re doing it for them too

And it starts with us

Always

Even if it means that we have to eat something different to them at the dinner table initially. Even if it means we have to change the way we shop

They’re always watching

One of the six pillars of Op Rebuild is the Fun, Rest and Decompression pillar

It’s no surprise that it’s one pillar that most new members of my programme struggle with

Growth and development is all about ‘more’, right?

What I think most men fail to recognise, is that elevating the F,R&D pillar expands your capacity

You achieve more, tolerate more, grow more…

By doing less

Part of obtaining a sense of balance is allowing the pendulum to swing both ways

To be able to push hard, you’ve got to pull hard too

With new growth comes complexity. For that to be sustainable you also need a healthy dose of simplicity too.

At least that’s the conclusion I came to anyway

When was the last time you were genuinely happy?

And what was it about that period of your life?

✅ Like Danny who dropped 49lbs, overcame complex ptsd, started prioritising himself, became a role model to his two young children and dramatically increased his business’ revenue despite working fewer hours

✅ Like Owen, who overcame type 2 diabetes, social anxiety, increased his testosterone naturally, gained muscle, started enjoying regular adventure in his life and all whilst successfully breaking through a stressful period in his business

📌 If all that sounds good, then give the page a follow and comment (or DM) with the word “ROADMAP” and I’ll have the series sent to you right away 🤝

Every so often I look back at my notes in my journal to check in on past and recent thoughts and reflections

Here are 50 of them which I wrote down back in February

If you feel that you’re coasting right now

You’re not living life on your terms

Maybe you’re having to build your life around work because that’s always taking up most of your time, headspace, focus and attention

Then comment the word “ROADMAP”

I’ve got a 6 part series I think will change all of that for you

Here are 5 key points to help you act as the role model you aspire to be 👇

1️⃣ Perspective
Understand the difference between things you can & can’t control. Is it something within your power to change? If not, let it go.

“It’s normal to feel pain in your hands and feet, if you’re using your feet as feet and your hands as hands. And for a human being to feel stress is normal—if he’s living a normal human life. And if it’s normal, how can it be bad?” - Marcus Aurelius

2️⃣ Value of Now
Stressors often arise from worrying about the future. Anxiety, after-all, is the fear of something that has not yet happened

“Today I escaped anxiety. Or no, I discarded it, because it was within me, in my own perceptions — not outside.” - Marcus Aurelius

We often react to immediate problems without considering the bigger picture. Will this stressor matter in a year? Five years? If the answer is no, try to loosen up

“You have power over your mind not outside events, realise this and you will find strength.” — Seneca

3️⃣ Opportunity
Whilst it doesn’t feel like it at the time, life’s challenges are our opportunities to learn. Find the hidden lesson

“there are more things…likely to frighten us than there are to crush us; we suffer more in imagination than in reality.” — Seneca

4️⃣ Identity
Consider the other pillars of your identity… Do you see yourself as helpful? Caring? A Role model? If so, a small act of kindness can lift your mood and help pivot the focus

“Man is not worried by real problems so much as by his imagined anxieties about real problems.” — Epictetus

5️⃣ Write
It slows down your thinking, removing the control that your ‘chimp’ has over you and therefore rationalises your thoughts

A lot of blokes dismiss writing.

Pre-formatted journals are gimmicks IMO. Whilst looking at a blank page can be overwhelming. It’s personal & you need to experiment with your own strategy.

You need to practice introspection.

It’s a very big part of what I do inside of Op Rebuild

Hit the reset button in 60 minutes by following these 6 simple steps:

1️⃣ Put away devices + Grab a pen and paper:

Your iPhone is great for many things. Getting clarity is not one of them.

Grab a pen. It’ll slow down and rationalise your thinking

2️⃣ Write down your biggest goals for:

* Your health & performance
* Relationships
* Finances
* Personal development
* Occupation
* Sense of fun & rest

Circle the top 2 (or less) for each pillar

Focus only on those

The goals you didn’t circle are now your biggest distractions

3️⃣ Assign a daily action to each of your goals:

Choose a small daily non-negotible that will move the needle towards it.

Example:
Goal = Learn the guitar
Daily action = Spend 30 minutes learning to read music

4️⃣ Write down your ideal daily schedule:

From the time you wake up. To the time you go to bed.

Lay it out in google calendars (or similar). I like notion as it automatically moves things around to fit my dedicated hours.

Be specific. Factor in time for rest, ‘white space’, regular short walks, common behaviours like scrolling etc

5️⃣ Lay out your current daily schedule:

Lay it out in google calendars (or similar)

But this time write down what your routine actually looks like, now.

Compare it to your “ideal” day.

Note the biggest differences and plan how you can improve.

6️⃣ Execute:

Take action.

Right now.

Do the smallest possible task that will move you towards one of your goals.

The last thing we want is for this to become mental ma********on.

Planning is not taking action. Doing, is.
