Proof that the hydration break is not really about players taking fluids to avoid de-hydration. And don’t try to tell me FIFA were not bowing to USA pressure when they introduced this THREE minute stoppage. If it was really about hydration and not creating an advertising break for networks the break would be 45 seconds or a minute maximum. Not only is this disrupting the natural flow of the game and often affecting the outcome, it’s a stoppage that increases the risk of injury. Especially where matches are played in air conditioned stadiums with the roof on. JG

Sad to see how Ronaldo is handicapping Portugal 🇵🇹 and Bruno Fernandes. Still love Cristiano but he cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job and now he’s dragging his country down. Surely he’d be far more effective as a super sub when opponents are tired. JG

Five years on, Roberto Martinez is no closer to solving the problem that derailed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United. How do you fit Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo in the same team?

As Portugal stumbled through their opening World Cup game against DR Congo, Ronaldo was a passenger — flopping when every other major forward has come to the party in North America. Thierry Henry was scathing, pointing out a key moment where the 41-year-old cut into Fernandes' path instead of dragging a defender away.

"The team needs to score, not you need to score," Henry said.

It's a problem United fans know well. When Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford in 2021, Fernandes had his worst season at the club — 10 goals in 46 games. The season before, without Ronaldo, he scored 28 in 58. Since Ronaldo left, this has become Fernandes' team once again. That didn't happen in time to save Solskjaer. After Portugal's opener, it might not happen in time to save Martinez either.
