Monday 22nd June – Manchester & Greater Manchester VI Sports Day

What a fantastic day at this year’s Manchester & Greater Manchester VI Sports Day, held at Trafford Athletic Track, Longford Park, Stretford, Manchester. This annual event attracted record-breaking numbers, with over 100 participants attending and taking part in a wide range of sports throughout the day.

The Lancashire Lions were once again proud to be a regular feature of this fantastic event, delivering both Blind Cricket and Goalball. Our cricket sessions proved extremely popular, while our Goalball activities provided a clear pathway into further opportunities through Goalball UK sessions, with activities continuing throughout both the morning and afternoon.

A huge thank you goes to our coaches Ben Tanner, Saif Rehman, Nathan Jack, Shoaib Nazir, Sheraz Chohan and Heather Norton for their outstanding support and delivery of both Cricket and Goalball sessions. Their dedication helped make the day a huge success and continues to strengthen opportunities for visually impaired sport across Manchester and Greater Manchester.

The future looks incredibly promising for visually impaired sport in the region, with exciting pathways now developing for both Lancashire Lions Cricket and Goalball. We would also like to extend a special thank you and congratulations to Dan Stroker, who has organised this event for many years. The event continues to grow and improve year after year, and this year’s record attendance is a testament to all of his hard work and commitment.

Despite the hot weather, it was incredibly rewarding to see so many smiles on participants’ faces and hear the overwhelmingly positive feedback received throughout the day.

One quote that particularly stood out came from Finley McIntyre, aged 13, who has no sight. After taking part in the cricket session, Finley said:

“Hitting the ball while playing cricket has made me feel so proud and excited to get involved more because I don’t often get these opportunities. I’ve really enjoyed having this chance and I want to play more blind sports with the Lions.”

Hearing comments like this reminds us why these events are so important and why creating opportunities for young people to access sport matters so much.

The day also provided a fantastic opportunity to network with schools, organisations, and partners who share the same vision of increasing opportunities for visually impaired people through sport. By working together, we can continue to create more pathways and opportunities for participants of all ages and abilities.

We look forward to building on the success of this year’s event and opening our doors to young and emerging talent who may one day represent the Lancashire Lions. The future is bright, and we can’t wait to see what comes next.

🏏 CUP QUARTER-FINAL REPORT | SUNDAY 7 JUNE

The Lions won the toss and elected to bowl first, making a positive start with disciplined bowling that put Sussex under pressure from the outset.

Sussex found scoring difficult during the opening stages thanks to excellent spells from Shah and Tas, whose accuracy and control kept the run rate in check. At the 15-over mark, Sussex were 76-1, with the Lions firmly in control and applying pressure throughout the first half of the innings.

As the innings developed, Sussex captain Dan played a composed and well-calculated knock, helping his side build momentum. Sussex accelerated during the final 15 overs, finding boundaries more regularly and making the most of their opportunities to finish on 243-1.

In reply, the Lions suffered an early setback when Shah was run out in just the second over. Despite this, Shahzab produced an outstanding innings, batting positively and keeping the Lions in contention for large parts of the chase.

However, regular wickets prevented the Lions from building the partnerships needed to maintain momentum. Shahzab’s excellent 80 from 53 balls was the standout performance with the bat, but the Lions eventually fell short of the target.

A special mention must go to Sussex’s outstanding fielding performance. Their totally blind players played a significant role throughout the match, with Tiny Morris taking a spectacular catch to dismiss a key batter and help turn the game in Sussex’s favour.

Looking Ahead

The Lions will now regroup and look to bounce back when they face Sussex again in August in two important fixtures — a National League match and a T20 quarter final

Despite the result, there were many positives to take from the performance, and the team remains focused and determined for the challenges ahead.

🦁💙

Match Report – Sunday 31st May
Lions (Lancashire Lions) vs Greater Manchester Falcons

The Lancashire Lions hosted the Greater Manchester Falcons in a competitive fixture on Sunday 31st May.

The Lions won the toss and elected to bowl first, immediately applying pressure through disciplined bowling and sharp fielding

Early rewards came when Shoaib struck, with Arslan taking a smart catch at deep midwicket to remove the opening batter. Despite this, Wasim Afridi played a well-constructed innings for the Falcons, scoring an impressive 53 off 35 balls and finding gaps with confidence.

Nathan made an impact with the ball, taking 2 wickets while Lewis also chipped in with a wicket of his own alongside his excellent work in the field. The Lions’ fielding unit remained sharp throughout, with Lewis again involved in a key run-out in combination with Nathan, then Sheraz getting an other run out to help lions gain more bowling points the Falcons’ innings began to lose momentum.

Under pressure and chasing maximum batting points, the Falcons were restricted to 195 for 8 in 26 overs.

In response, the Lions began their chase positively with Nadeem and Arslan. However, Nadeem was unfortunate to fall hit wicket, followed by Arslan being run out after a brilliant piece of fielding.

Mohammed Salim Patel) and Sheraz then rebuilt the innings with a strong and composed partnership, both playing with intent and timing. Salim accumulated the strike in his 46 runs who was dismissed by a great and sharp catch taken by Sajjad while Sheraz added a fluent and precision 52 off 30 balls before he was retired not out

Shoaib and Kashif then helped guide the Lions towards the required rate in the latter stages, ensuring valuable batting points were secured.

The Lions finished with a strong batting effort, losing only 3 wickets in total during the chase.

Final Points:
Falcons – 10 points
Lions – 13 points

A strong all-round performance sees the Lancashire Lions take valuable points and remain firmly top of the table, with one game in hand over most teams. The season is far from over, with plenty still to play for as the Lions continue their push at the top.

Standout Performances:

* Nathan – 2 wicket + key run-out
* Lewis – 1 wicket + outstanding fielding involvement
* Salim & Sheraz – over 100-run partnership
* Salman Sheikh – economical and disciplined spell in the first innings

A professional and controlled performance from the Lions, showing depth in both batting and bowling as the is season coming to its peak.
