Swimmer Welfare Update
Some of you may have been at the venue today when a swimmer became unwell and collapsed shortly after exiting the water.
Following an immediate assessment by Karen and monitoring, it became clear that additional support and observations would be required, assistance was requested from a local medical team to provide further care.
We're pleased to update everyone that the swimmer has made a full recovery and has now been discharged home.
It's important to note that this was not a first time open water swimmer. But an experienced one that has completed longer swims in colder conditions previously.
The most likely cause was a combination of the time in the water and the sudden change in position from swimming to standing upright, resulting in a significant drop in blood pressure and hypothermia.
Today's incident serves as a reminder that open water swimming places unique demands on the body, and unexpected medical issues can occur to anyone, regardless of experience.
We'd like to thank everyone who gave the medical team space to work and supported the situation calmly and respectfully.
For those who sometimes question the value of organised swim sessions, this is exactly why qualified, experienced staff are present. Behind every session is a team trained to recognise problems early, respond appropriately, and manage emergencies professionally when they arise.
We're delighted that today's story has a positive outcome, and we wish the swimmer a restful evening and look forward to seeing them back enjoying the water soon. 💙🌊
