We are pleased to have been commissioned to rebuild the organ of Carlisle Cathedral. The instrument was built by ‘Father’ Henry Willis in 1856 and 1875, with further work by Harrison & Harrison (1907), J.W. Walker & Sons (1962) and David Wells Organ Builders (1997).

The aims of the forthcoming work are to safeguard the reliability of the organ for many years to come, and to consolidate the tonal style. The internal mechanism of the organ will be entirely replaced with new in a revised layout, and a new console provided. The tonal scheme will be revised with a particular focus on the organ’s role in supporting choral and congregational singing.

The specification will be released in the coming months. The work is due to commence in late 2027 with completion in 2029. The consultant for the work is Nicholas Thistlethwaite.
