On the cricket front, SMCC have enjoyed one of our most successful seasons to date!

A thriving junior section saw over 100 young players get involved, from all stars all the way up to under 15s. We are massively grateful to the Mid Counties Co-Op for their generous grant, which went towards training equipment for our junior section, helping us to provide the best possible opportunities for our young players to develop and enjoy the game. At SMCC, we are very proud of the development of our ground over the last few seasons. Our new seating area in front of the pavilion provides players, spectators and visitors an area to enjoy the cricket, have a chat, and most importantly make good use of the bar!

🏆🏆 U13 LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 🔥🔥

Well done to our under 13 A team who, with a comprehensive 9 wicket victory over Swindon last Friday, brought home the club’s second league title this season!

We bowled first, bowling out Swindon for just 61, with Ollie Sheppard taking an astonishing 6-25 from his 4 overs. We then knocked the runs off in less than 10 overs to bring home the title!

Finishing above some of the biggest clubs in the county is a testament to the hard work of our junior coaches in recent years. Big thanks to Andy, JK and Chris for their efforts with the u13s. It is great to see our junior section thriving!

Despite a strong fielding and bowling performance from the 1s on Saturday, our batting fired like a wet firework and we ended up 104 runs short. We are still in the race for safety however, as we sit 10 points behind 8th place. Onto next week.

On the flip side, the 2s completed a comprehensive double over Bradford-on-Avon 3s. Batting first, we made 201, losing only 3 wickets thanks to a 72 not out from Felix Wiltshire. Old boys Jarv and Howler added the last 62 between them taking us past 200. A tidy bowling performance in response left the oppo with no chance of a chase, with Max and Simon taking 2 each, and Henry removing their dangerman on 60 with a caught and bowled. Digby then came back on to clean up the tail, 3 of which ducks, leaving him with 4 wickets.

Last Sunday, a young Sherston side faced a strong Grittleton XI (with the help of Lea Jr and Sr). They batted well in the heat, setting us 179 to win, and after a good opening spell, with both our openers falling in the first 2 overs, we never looked like reaching the total. Highlight of the day however was Michael Dicks making his maiden 50 off 49 balls. Some are comparing him to a young Joe Root with the way he drives through the covers.

Big few weeks ahead with the culmination of the league season, followed by our last 2 Sunday matches!

Here are your Magna lineups for two huge matches this Saturday!

The 1s take the long trip to Lambourn, chasing a win that may take them out of the bottom 2.

The 2s are back after a week off, hosting BoA 3s. Last time out we had the points wrapped up by 4pm, so this should be an interesting one!

The bar will be open from 1pm, so if you fancy a drink and a break from the heat come down to Pinkney Park!

🏏 2nd XI results round-up 🏏

A similarly tricky period for the 2s, with a couple of defeats against Chippenham then away at HSV.

The promotion charge got back on track last weekend however, with the 2s coming out on top on a thriller against Chippenham. A steady bowling performance saw wickets shared around, it was a day for the leggies as Simon and Henry both took 3.

The game remained in the balance for the majority of our chase. However the decisive innings came from our top scorer Ollie Knight, who opened and made a very mature 67, taking us to within 35 of victory. At 142/7, there was still a bit of work to do, but this was no problem for Max who got us over the line with a 29*. A crucial win at this point in the season.

With a game in hand on Westbury, we sit 3 points outside the promotion spots. Big 3 weeks ahead!

1st XI results round-up 🏏

A tricky few weeks for the 1st XI.

We managed a big win at Malford on the 18th. On a good batting pitch, we restricted them to a sub-par 204, thanks to some tidy bowling and a few late wickets from the Dickos and Steve. DB then left us with a leaving present before heading back to work for the next few weeks, in the form of a huge 112*, opening the batting and also hitting the winning runs.

A tough couple of weeks then followed against some strong opposition. We fell apart in the field against Beckington, then the week after at Cobras, despite a great start with James and Harris both opening and scoring 51, 336 was too big a total to chase.

This weekend a crunch match against Winsley took place. We were put into field, and after a tidy first 30 overs we had managed to keep them to just 90/4, largely thanks to a brilliant opening 3-19 from Greg. Unfortunately, we paid the price late on for not taking more wickets, as their two set batter went on a rampage in the last 15 overs, putting on an extra 100 to finish on 196/8.

With the bat it was a familiar story. Ash, James and Oscar all managed to get in, but none could push on and provide us with a decisive innings. A couple of comical wickets/retirements left us with not enough wickets in hand to score the last 52 runs.

With 3 games to play, we sit 14 points from safety. Big few weeks ahead, the survival charge is well and truly on! 💪

🏆🏆 LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 🔥🔥

A win for the Women’s first XI on Thursday saw them crowned champions of Division A! A brillliant outcome in their first season of league cricket, hopefully a sign of much more success to come in the future!

Melksham 254 v Sherston 303

We played away against Melksham women. Our strongest opposition by far this season.
We own the toss and opted to bat, hoping the sun would not be so bright or hot for our fielding.

Melksham had some good bowlers, the best we’ve faced this season. We scored a lot of quick singles and some excellent shot placement with top scores from Sarah W (17) and Tea (23) and Penny (22).

The pressure was on as we took to the field for the second half, knowing our fielding had to be tight and extras kept to a minimum.

And we did just that, Kate P taking 2 catches and a stumping behind the wickets.
Sophie bowling 3 overs for 10 runs and 3 wickets, Rachel T, 3 overs for just 12 runs, Becca 2 overs, 2 wickets for 10 runs. Nicky played her part, reliable in the field stopping the boundaries (no diving needed this week!)

A confident performance by the team, as captain I couldn’t be more proud. And a testament to the hard work and commitment Alan and Caroline have put into the Sherston woman’s softball team - thank you both.

On Saturday the 2s suffered just their second loss of the season against Westbury.

Our batters struggled to get off the mark due to some good bowling, in the end the key contributions were a patient 22 from Ollie Knight, and a quick 24 from JK at the end of the innings to push us up to 137ao.

Whilst our bowlers got well into their batting lineup, taking 8 wickets, their number 3 made a stubborn 72, and in the end was the difference between the sides.

Our Sunday side got their season started with a 92 run win over the Venturers. It was a bad toss to lose for the oppo, as the wicket was looking pristine. We put their bowlers to work quickly and the runs flowed throughout the 35 overs, with 102* from Oscar, 61* from Harris and 30* from DB. We finished on 222-2.

Some very good bowling from our juniors saw Viraaj take 2 wickets early on, with Ben bowling tidily from the other end, taking 1-6 from 5 overs. After the first change, Tom and Ollie McKay took 1 each, before Henry K came on to take a fantastic 4-22 from 6 overs, with 2 involvements behind the stumps from Ollie Knight. Oscar L then brought the win home with the 10th wicket.

We host the Neeld on Thursday this week, before both senior sides are back in action on Saturday!
