The amazing scenery hits you early on the Pennine Barrier Ultra! After climbing Malham Cove at just over one mile, you’re following the Pennine Way, passing through the Dry Valley of Watlowes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
The Pennine Way long-distance footpath leads up the valley. It’s a deep limestone canyon that was carved out by a glacial overspill from Malham Tarn, which you will pass after 5 miles.
During the ice age, underground water froze while surface water melted. The meltwater flowed over the surface, forming valleys and waterfalls. When the water could flow underground again, the valleys remained dry.
