Bowing in and out isn’t just tradition for tradition’s sake.

It marks the shift into focused training and back out of it again, a small but deliberate signal of respect for the space, the instructor and each other. Simple, but it sets the tone for everything that follows.

I still train, not just teach.

It would be easy to only ever be the one teaching from now on, but staying a student too, still working on my own technique, still learning, keeps me honest about what I’m asking of everyone else on the mat.

Want your child training somewhere that still values learning at every level? Message us to find out more.

September’s a good time to try your first class. New term, new faces starting alongside you.

A lot of people start in September simply because it feels like a natural reset point, school term starting, routines forming again. If you’ve been thinking about it, this is as good a time as any. We aren't a scary bunch, I promise 😆

Message us to find out more about coming down and having a go, Osu.

Kids and adults train side by side on Saturdays. Same class, same mat.

Saturday’s session is open age, so your child could easily end up training a few feet away from an adult beginner, both working on the same basics, both held to the same values. It’s not split by age group, everyone trains together.

If you’re weighing it up for your child, message us and we’ll talk you through what a Saturday session actually looks like.

What a normal Saturday actually looks like here.

Warm-up, kihon, some partner work, a bit of kata, then bow out. Nothing flashy about a normal Saturday, and that’s exactly the point, consistency is what builds everything else.

Come and watch a normal class before deciding if it’s for your needs Message us to arrange it.

What actually happens during a grading?

A grading tests technique, but just as much it tests focus, effort and respect under a bit of pressure. Students know roughly what to expect beforehand, it’s not designed to catch anyone out.

Curious what grading looks like for your child before they get there? Ask us anything.

What actually got me into karate in the first place wasn’t discipline. It was belonging.

The technique came later. What kept me showing up as a kid was the structure and the people, having somewhere consistent that made sense when a lot of the rest of life didn’t. That’s the same reason a lot of our students keep coming back now.

If that resonates, message us to find out more about signing your child up.

What your kid actually gets out of karate (hint: it's not just kicks).

Body: Focus. The ability to sit still and listen. Confidence that isn't loud or showy, the quiet kind that comes from knowing you can do hard things. That's what we see most in kids after a few months at the dojo, alongside all the punches and kicks.

Book your child's class for when we start again in September, message the page to get started.

I can't spar, does that mean karate isn't for me?

No. Sensei John is disabled and doesn't spar much himself, and he's built a whole training philosophy around the idea that sparring is one part of karate, not the whole of it. Kata, form work, discipline, focus, confidence, there's a full art here for anyone, whatever their body can or can't do.

However you move, there's always a place for you on the dojo floor.
