Children are human animals first — and before we can understand behaviour, we need to understand what is happening underneath it.
Safety. Belonging. Power and control. These primal needs can influence how children respond to boundaries, frustration, conflict and challenge.
But understanding behaviour is only half the job. Parents also need a framework for leadership.
That’s where I believe parenting can learn a lot from good sports coaching. A boxing coach has to build trust, establish boundaries, manage emotion, create appropriate challenge and gradually help a young person develop greater self-control.
The goal isn’t simply to stop difficult behaviour.
It’s to understand what drives it — and then coach the skills the child still needs to develop.
🥊 Stop reacting like a parent. Start guiding like a coach.
