When we’re in the middle of something painful, it’s incredibly difficult to imagine life feeling any different.

Our imagination is limited by our current experiences.

We naturally assume tomorrow will feel the same as today.

I certainly did.

When I got divorced, I wasn’t dreaming about travelling the world or building a business.

I was simply trying to get through each day.

That’s why I never tell anyone they should feel grateful for their divorce or that everything happens for a reason.

Divorce is painful.

It’s one of life’s biggest transitions.

But I’ve seen, time and time again, that today’s circumstances don’t define the possibilities for tomorrow.

Not because life suddenly becomes easy.

But because, over time, we begin to heal.

We discover strengths we didn’t know we had.

We become clearer about what really matters to us.

And we start creating a future that reflects who we’re becoming, rather than the life we thought we’d have.

If you’re in the middle of your own divorce and you can’t imagine feeling hopeful about the future, I completely understand.

You don’t need to see the whole picture today.

Just don’t assume that what you can see today is all that’s waiting for you.

Save this post for the days you need reminding that your current circumstances aren’t the whole story.

When you're just trying to get through today... it's impossible to imagine what life might look like a year from now.

You're trying to navigate difficult conversations.

Make decisions you never imagined having to make.

Hold everything together.

The last thing you're thinking is - One day I'll look back and realise how much I've grown.

It certainly never crossed my mind when I was going through my divorce.

And I would never tell you to be grateful for it.

Divorce is one of the hardest things you'll ever experience.

But one of the things Positive Psychology has taught me is that our biggest periods of growth rarely feel like growth while we're living through them.

When you're in survival mode, you're not looking for lessons.

You're just trying to make it through today.

It's only later, with the benefit of hindsight, that you realise something else was happening too.

Little by little, you begin trusting yourself again.

You become clearer about what really matters.

You set healthier boundaries.

You stop living on autopilot and start creating a life that's aligned with who you are now.

That's the kind of growth I'm talking about.

Not pretending divorce was a positive experience.

But recognising that, over time, something meaningful can emerge from even our hardest chapters.

So if you're in the middle of your own divorce right now and you can't see anything beyond the pain, that's completely understandable

You don't need to have your whole future figured out today.

You don't need to become a different person overnight.

Just keep taking the next step.

One day, you may look back and realise this chapter didn't just change your circumstances.

It helped you discover who you are... and who you want to become next.

For a long time, I believed my divorce meant I'd failed.

I saw an interview with Jennifer Lopez recently where she said:

"Breakups are not a failure... they're a launchpad into your next best self."

It really took me back to how I felt when I was going through my own divorce years ago.

Because I definitely didn't feel like someone who was about to become my best self.

I felt like I'd failed… at the thing that mattered most to me in life.

And it was the first thing in my life that I genuinely felt I'd failed at.

I'd always worked hard, excelled at school, and even been voted Head Girl.

I’d qualified as a Chartered Accountant and built a successful career in Finance.

If I set my mind to something, I generally achieved it.

So when my marriage ended, it hit me incredibly hard.

At the time, I didn't know anyone else who was divorced. And it made me feel incredibly alone, as though everyone else had somehow managed to make marriage work... except me.

So as well as the heartbreak I felt embarrassed and ashamed... and thought everyone was judging me.

Looking back now with the benefit of hindsight and everything I’ve learnt, I can see how harsh I was being on myself.

Because divorce doesn’t mean you’re a failure.

And it's not a measure of whether you've succeeded or failed in life.

It's just something that's happened to you.

Your marriage ending doesn't erase everything you've achieved, the person you are or the life you've built.

So, if you’re in the midst of a divorce right now and feeling a failure and all those other negative feelings… I want you to know that your divorce doesn’t define you.

And it certainly doesn't define your worth.

There comes a point where you’ve made the decision.

You know your marriage is over.

You know where you want to get to.

But you have absolutely no idea where to start… and why would you.

I see this so often.

Women like you who are successful in their careers, organised, capable and used to making difficult decisions.

The person everyone else turns to when there’s a problem to solve.

So, it can feel incredibly unsettling when you’re suddenly faced with something you don’t know how to navigate.

Because divorce isn’t just one decision.

It’s dozens of conversations, practical arrangements and life-changing decisions, all whilst you’re trying to process the emotional impact of everything that’s happening.

It’s no wonder so many women tell me they feel overwhelmed.

You don’t need to have all the answers right now.

You just need to know what the next step is.

And then the one after that.

That’s exactly what we do when we work together.

We slow the noise down, make sense of what’s happening and create a clear plan so you can move forward with confidence instead of trying to carry it all on your own.

If you’ve reached the point where you know what you want but you’re feeling overwhelmed by everything that comes next, I’d love to have a chat. You can book a free discovery call via the link in my bio.

One of the biggest misconceptions about divorce is that it’s simply a legal process.

It not… it’s so much more.

It’s an emotional, practical and financial life transition happening all at once.

And one of the things that surprises many of the women I work with is how they don’t recognise themselves when they’re going through it.

These are intelligent, capable women.

Women who are used to making decisions, solving problems and holding everything together.

Then suddenly they’re struggling to concentrate.

Questioning decisions they were certain about yesterday.

Changing their mind daily.

Feeling overwhelmed by things they’d normally deal with easily.

Divorce affects every area of your life at once.

Your home.

Your finances.

Your children.

Your relationships.

Your future.

That’s a huge amount for anyone to process.

And whilst all of that is happening, most women are still trying to show up at work, for the kids and for everyone around them.

It’s exhausting.

You don’t have to navigate it alone.

And that’s where coaching with me comes in.

Because having someone in your corner can make an enormous difference to how you experience this chapter of your life.

Not because I’m going to tell you what to do.

But I am going to coach you through this chapter as positively as possible so that you can protect your mental health, minimise the impact on your children and make decisions you’ll feel good about in years to come.

When I’ve been having horrendous gallbladder attacks over the last few months, Marley has barely left my side.

Whilst I’ve been pacing up and down the house in agony at 3am, he’s been pacing up and down with me.

When I’ve been sat on the stairs rocking in pain because I couldn’t get comfortable, he’s sat there patiently beside me.

And when I’ve been throwing up from the pain, he’s waited outside the bathroom door until I came out again.

He’s been my shadow through all of this and it’s made me think a lot about gratitude.

It’s one of the reasons I talk to my clients about gratitude so often.

Not because it makes the difficult things disappear.

But because when we’re struggling, it’s easy for our attention to become completely consumed by what’s wrong, what we’re worried about or what we’ve lost.

Gratitude helps us remember that those things aren’t the whole story.

Research consistently shows that gratitude can have a positive impact on our mental health and wellbeing.

It’s taking a moment to notice what’s still good, even during difficult times.

The friend who checks in on you.
The walk in nature that clears your head.
The sunshine on your face.
The cat who refuses to leave your side.

I know that when life feels difficult, it’s really easy to be consumed by what’s not going well.

Gratitude helps you notice the things that are still bringing joy, comfort and meaning to your life.

For me, that’s often my cats.

They bring me joy every single day.

And over the last few months, they’ve also been a reminder that even when life feels difficult, there is still so much to be grateful for.

Marley is definitely top of my gratitude list.

I’ve always been someone who gets on with things.

So after having my gallbladder removed a few weeks ago, I genuinely thought I’d be back at work after a couple of days.

Maybe not at full capacity.

But answering emails from the sofa was definitely my plan.

Instead, I was exhausted and didn’t have the energy for anything other than catching up on the latest Netflix dramas.

But it was still really difficult to accept that I needed to slow down.

And not to push through like I’d normally do and take the time to recover properly

And that’s something I see all the time with the clients I work with during divorce.

They’re successful in their careers or businesses.
They’re used to juggling work, children, family responsibilities and everyone else’s needs.
And from the outside, they look like they’ve got it all under control.

But what people don’t always see is the effort it’s taking.

The sleepless nights.
The constant overthinking.
The emotional exhaustion.
The effort it takes to just get through the day.

The pressure of navigating one of the biggest transitions of their life whilst still trying to show up in the way they’re used to.

But sometimes the most important thing you can do isn’t to push harder.

It’s slowing down and acknowledging that you’re carrying a lot.

So if you’re going through divorce right now and finding that you don’t quite have the same capacity you normally do, this is your reminder that you don’t have to keep proving how well you’re coping… to yourself or anyone else.

You’re dealing with a lot.

And it’s okay to give yourself the space you need to heal, process what’s happened and look after yourself for a change.
