Great to see the benefits of internal martial arts and qigong finally recognized by the west!

Taiji (Tai chi), which the article focuses on, is one of China’s three main internal martial arts. I practice this, but don’t teach it. I do teach another internal martial art, Baguazhang, and of course, qigong!!

There’s loads of good info in the article, which I’ve included below 👇. I didn’t know, for example, that low back pain is the leading cause of disability in 160 countries!

From the Guardian: 👍😊

Traditional Chinese exercises such as tai chi can offer wide-ranging benefits for people with musculoskeletal disorders, improving physical function, pain, mental health, sleep quality and bone mineral density, according to the largest review of its kind.

More than 1.7bn people have musculoskeletal conditions worldwide. While prevalence varies by age and diagnosis, people of all ages in every country and every continent are affected.

Musculoskeletal conditions significantly limit mobility and dexterity, leading to early retirement from work, lower levels of wellbeing and reduced ability to participate in society. They are also the leading contributor to disability worldwide, with low back pain being the single leading cause of disability in 160 countries.

There was already evidence indicating traditional Chinese exercises were associated with beneficial health outcomes in people with musculoskeletal disorders, but much of it was fragmented and contained inconsistencies.

The overarching review of pooled data analyses of systematic reviews by researchers at hospitals and universities in China, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, drew on 92 data syntheses from 1,744 randomised controlled clinical trials.

It found “high certainty evidence” for the effectiveness of traditional Chinese exercise – such as tai chi, qigong, baduanjin, wuqinxi and yijinjing – for a range of health outcomes for people with musculoskeletal disorders.

These included improving movement in knee osteoarthritis, mental health associated with neck pain and knee osteoarthritis, and sleep quality associated with fibromyalgia.

Tai chi, in particular, significantly eased chronic musculoskeletal pain and stiffness in several conditions while increasing bone mineral density in participants with osteopenia or osteoporosis, the research found.

Maximum benefits were achieved when people did these exercises for longer than six months, at least three times a week, clocking up a total of at least 150 minutes a week.

“This comprehensive [umbrella review] provides a definitive, high-level evidence synthesis supporting [traditional Chinese exercises] as effective interventions for a range of musculoskeletal conditions],” the researchers concluded.

“The evidence, particularly for tai chi, reaches high certainty for improving key outcomes such as physical function in knee osteoarthritis, mental health in neck pain, sleep in fibromyalgia and bone density in osteoporosis.”

The findings suggested traditional Chinese exercises should be included in clinical guidelines and rehabilitation programmes worldwide, the researchers added.

“[These] exercises represent a safe, accessible, and cost-effective strategy that can complement conventional therapies, reduce pharmacological reliance, and empower patients in self-management.”

While the prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions increases with age, younger people are also affected, often during their peak income-earning years.

And with global population growth and ageing, the number of people living with musculoskeletal conditions and associated health problems is rapidly increasing.

“For healthcare systems and policymakers, promoting the adoption of traditional Chinese exercises, particularly in community and primary care settings, could be a strategic component of public health initiatives aimed at healthy ageing and chronic disease prevention,” the researchers said.

🌸 The 15 Days of Chinese New Year: A Journey of Blessings, Reunion, and Renewal

Chinese New Year is not just a single celebration — it is a 15-day festival rich with tradition, symbolism, and meaningful rituals, each day carrying its own energy for luck, prosperity, and harmony.

Day 1 – Yuanri (New Day) marks fresh beginnings. Families gather for reunion meals, set off fireworks to chase away the mythical monster Nian, and honor ancestors to invite blessings for the year ahead.

Day 2 – Chigou Ri (Dog Day) focuses on worshipping heaven and earth, while married daughters return to visit their parents — symbolizing family unity and gratitude.

Day 3 – Chi Kou (Red Mouth Day) is believed to attract arguments if social visits are made, so people stay home or attend temple fairs instead to pray for peace.

Day 4 – Shei Zhu Ri welcomes the return of the God of Wealth. Many businesses prepare offerings, hoping for a prosperous year ahead.

Day 5 – Po Wu is an important wealth day where households burn old waste to clear bad luck and officially receive the God of Wealth.

Day 6 – Liu Mao is for cleansing workspaces and slowly returning to daily routines, symbolizing progress after rest.

Day 7 – Renri (Human Day) celebrates the creation of humanity. Families eat seven-vegetable soup to attract health and good fortune.

Day 8 honors elders through prayers for longevity and continued family gatherings.

Day 9 – Heaven Worship Day is especially significant in southern China, where offerings are made to the Jade Emperor for divine protection and blessings.

Days 10 to 14 are filled with preparation — making lanterns, shopping at markets, and planning final celebrations.

Day 15 – Yuanxiao Jie (Lantern Festival) beautifully closes the New Year period with glowing lantern displays, riddles, and sweet tangyuan symbolizing reunion and completeness.

✨ Together, these 15 days represent cleansing the past, welcoming fortune, strengthening family bonds, and aligning with positive energy — making Chinese New Year a powerful spiritual and cultural reset for the year ahead.
