Thanks to Anne Reid and others from MUDC for helping make this a reality.

We’d like to hear from anyone locally who would like to join us on one of these walks….one of which take place through our very own Iniscarn 🌲 🌳

In co-operation with Embrace Tours and local guides, the heartland of Mid-Ulster offers some exciting and significant walking routes as part of the Sperrins Walking Programme. The walking weekend in Mid Ulster District Council will take place on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th September.

Delighted to see some investment in the local area. Something that we’ve lobbied for, for some time now.

We believe the play area and outdoor classroom will bring immense benefits to the youth of the area in the long term.

Looking forward to seeing the delivered project in May.

The committee of Protect Slieve Gallion are delighted to have received news that with a massive help from MUDC, we have reached the next stage in our bid for funding 💰 from DAERA for some amenities for Iniscarn Forest.

With some further work locals can look forward to adequate parking, upgraded paths and most excitingly.......a children’s playground 🌈🎠!

Should we be successful 🤞🏻, all works will be complete Spring 2022!
A long time coming but some light 💡 at the end of the tunnel!

Delighted to announce news of a grant recently received from CWSAN for partial funding for some picnic tables and benches for the forest.
Working with Mid Ulster District Council we aim to have these installed before the start of spring.

Iniscarn Forest is a small wood of just over 130 hectares lying to the west of Desertmartin village at the foot of Slieve Gallion in the Sperrin Mountains.

The forest is heavily used by recreational hill walkers, keep fit classes, families and local schools. We have been recently alerted of the poor conditions the forest is in, it was thinned out last year and this left much of the forest in a bad state. Following the thinning, more and more trees are falling due to the sparsity of the trees allowing more wind through.

We realise that the surrounding area in the parish of Desertmartin has very few in regards to amenities for young children, the closest playgrounds are in Draperstown or Moneymore. We feel this is unreasonable in this day in age and as such have begun dialogue with Mid Ulster District Council with a view of constructing a children’s play area in the old car park area just up the forest lane to the left. We feel that this area would lend itself perfectly to this scheme.

Unfortunately the council being the council have stated that they have no funds to allocate against such a scheme at this time, they have however installed a people counter at the forest entrance which will gauge usage of the forest with a view of revisiting the funding at a later date.

The council advised us to pull together a feasibility report for the forest, obtain some quotes and they would talk to the forestry service and us again. We have since got a quote for the play area and attach photos below.

I’m sure you’ll agree that this would suit the area perfectly.

If you all have any further ideas for the forest please drop us a line.

Thanks.

A good idea to all those visiting our local forests in Mid Ulster!
