Pencak Silat pronounced penchak silat is the general term used to describe martial arts originating in South East Asia, mostly Indonesia, Malaysia and Borneo. The name Pencak Silat covers the many combative forms indigenous to this region, many definitions exist of the name but perhaps the best translation is, Pencak (skilful body movements in variations for self-defence) Silat (fighting applications). Pencak is the art, Silat refers to the use of the art in combat situations, which is exactly the way it is taught, first the art of how to move with flowing hand and foot gestures in forms, drills and postures. Then these intricate forms are applied to fighting applications where the true meaning of the flowing movement becomes apparent. It is a full-body fighting form incorporating strikes, grappling and throwing in addition to weaponry. Every part of the body is used and subject to attack which make Pencak Silat a true self-defence art that maximizes the student’s strengths were height, build and size are not of great importance! Which gives some credence to the folklore that the origins of the art were from a woman who witnessed a monkey defending itself against a tiger. By copying the movement of the animal, she was later able to fend off a group of drunken men. As the story goes she in turn taught the movements to her husband who passed them down and from generation to generation. Were they were added to, and developed into the Arts and different styles we see today.

Please be vigilant of your surroundings especially over this next month were people are out more at night for party's or late night shopping. Surroundings are the most important thing to be vigilant about especially at night. Oh and trust you gut instinct if someone or something looks strange, weird or out of place then be alert. 🙏

What a superb weekend full of laughs and brilliant training, everyone showed great effort and focus the whole weekend to improve and fine tune the incredible martial art of Silektuo Pagupagu . This was the 3rd seminar between Ripon Silat Academy, Dublin Silek and ourselves.
This was our turn to host the gathering of the clans, sort of speaking and it was a brilliant weekend.
Special thanks goes out to Guru Mark Young, for making the trip from Yorkshire to teach in our club. Its such a pleasure to have someone like Mark with a wealth of Silat & Silek knowledge visit and teach in our club. Also big thanks to Paul Byrne and the guys who travelled up from Dublin Silek, many thanks for making the journey and making it a great training session.
To Darren Dougan, of Golden Dragon Martial Arts & Fitness Centre for his continuous support and allowing our club to training at his venue, we are so very grateful. 🙏 And finally to all the guys who week in and week out train hard in our club to learn and perfect our Art of Silat & Silek. It's not an easy thing to learn or do but it wouldn't be there without you all and your support and efforts. 🙏
Our club has been blessed with this great group of teachers, friends and students, all working together with direct learning and support from our Guru, Edwardo Guci. He has opened our eyes to traditional Minangkabau Silek in West Sumatra and we can not thank him enough for that. 🙏
