A fantastic afternoon for Maesteg Celtic Women as they secured a 23-run victory over Skewen Women at Garth Park.

Celtic produced an excellent display in the field to restrict Skewen to 116 from their 24 overs.

13-year-old Rhiannon Morris marked her debut in style, taking 2 wickets for just 9 runs in a brilliant spell, while Leanne Roderick also claimed 2 wickets.

In reply, Celtic chased the target superbly, finishing on 139 from their 24 overs. Gemma Owens led the way with an outstanding unbeaten 55*, including an incredible 7 sixes 👏 Kate Evans also added a valuable 12* as the innings closed strongly.

A brilliant team performance and another positive step forward for the women’s section 🌟

The women are back in action this Friday at home in another friendly before two league fixtures next weekend 🏏

Another rain-affected weekend for the club, with both sides battling difficult conditions throughout 🌧️

1st XI

The 1st XI’s match against Merthyr Tydfil was abandoned after tea following another interruption for rain.

In a reduced overs game, Maesteg Celtic posted 135-9 from 38 overs before the weather prevented any play in the second innings.

Rhodri Thomas played a superb late innings, finishing 41* not out to secure a crucial 4th batting point as the side reached 135. Zach Thomas also contributed an important 23.

2nd XI

The 2nd XI were unlucky to end up on the wrong side of the result at Ynystawe after rain altered the target during the chase. They would have won the game on Duckworth Lewis but lost due to the ruling of the game being decided on net run rate.

Batting first, Maesteg Celtic made 158, with Lyndon Harries finishing unbeaten on 41* which included two big 6’s and Shivam Patel contributing 23.

After the revised target was set, the hosts reached it with rain ending play 23 overs into the second innings. Lyndon Harries and Alfie Bevan both picked up 2 wickets.

Plenty of positives once again across both teams despite another disrupted weekend 👏

🏏 JUNIORS WANTED 🏏

Maesteg Celtic Cricket Club are continuing to grow our junior section and we’d love to welcome even more boys and girls to the club ahead of a busy summer of fixtures and festivals 🖤💛

Cricket is a brilliant sport for developing transferable skills that benefit young players in so many other sports too — including rugby and football. Skills such as hand-eye coordination, agility, concentration, teamwork, communication, decision making and confidence all help young athletes improve across multiple sports.

We pride ourselves on being a welcoming, family-friendly club where everyone is encouraged to come along, have fun and improve at their own pace — whether you’re completely new to cricket or already play regularly.
