White Maiden - Sports Fishing Charter, Lymington White Maiden II is a big 11m x 4m Catamaran, owned and skippered by myself, Les Jones.

I am an Offshore Yachtmaster, chartering my vessels since 2005 and full time since 2013, based at Lymington Quay. I pickup passengers at the Lymington Harbourmaster Pontoon, Bath RoadCar Park. There is early free car parking on the road outside plus toilets, an outside saltwater swimming pool and the Mayflower PH all within a 100 meters of the pickup point. We fish the Needles area of the English Channel with a useful fall back, the sheltered waters of Christchurch Bay or the Western Solent.

For the last two weeks we’ve been enjoying Torbay. No boat as the weather predictably changed for the worse but we have done lots of info gathering. Local skippers, marinas, tackle shops and harbour masters. Even managed to purchase a used Axiom MFD from a local basser that I was checking out on EBAY!! We played golf a few times and hosted family. Did some squid fishing and within two short sessions we cracked that and have squid for our dinner tonight. We have seen a few big old grey seals up very close and personal.

Looking forward to getting on the boat refreshed and raring to go again.

FYI - Tuna this year for here and our area are later again and so as it turns out with this weather, I have missed very little. The U.K. Tuna Champs out of Falmouth proved a challenge for all with the sea conditions. Nice to see a few Tuna coming out at Portland now. Sam on Silver Spray caught Tuna yesterday too. Seriously I can’t wait to get going again on the Bass, Tuna and sharks.

Two totally different days.

Wednesday the lads had a flat calm and not the wind that was expected. So we went deep in the small tide and found almost nothing interested in our bait or lures, save a huge launce and a congerette. On our very last effort back inshore we hit a big catch of large mackerel to rescue the day.

Thursday was to be an all out lure day inshore. The forecast again was wrong as we had a lot more wind than forecast. Lure Fishing was tricky in the fresh breeze with snags, numerous tackle losses, tangles and knots all day. We found the small jigs and poppers worked OK but practice is required to get the feel right. Tony caught bass, bream, scad, wrasse and mackerel while helping Roy. Then I managed to trick a nice bass testing a small 40g drift jig. Choppy days with multiple leaders being required like this wear you out but also make the next lure day even more interesting. Next stop, the tackle (toy) shop!!!

First pic is of me and a 6lb 8oz bass caught on a tiny 40g drift jig. The second pic is of Phil with one of the tiny bass that attacked a 120mm popper. Very few fish were caught on lead heads (soft plastics) today, probably due to the w**d.

Fishy Friday this week found us among hundreds of mackerel. Within 20 mins we had 120!!’ Armed with the best bait the first mark turned into a snake pit with congers to 30lb bending all their rods over. A bit too many for this crew. So a short move found a gurnard, a Tope, a Dogfish but not what we were after. When the tide changed we pushed back round into the snake pit!! So we up anchored and found a bit of ground that normally holds some nice bass. We lost more bass than we caught but what a lovely day with three nice ones on the boat and better ones spitting baits alongside. Big baits need to be hooked properly, a bit like a hair rig. Scad, Thornback Ray, Black Bream, Conger and Dogs also made a show at the last mark. Chris Smith was the Bass man on the day using just the mackerel heads.

Saturdays Tuna test trip - we had a really good go yesterday. 100miles 245 ltrs and 10 hours later, in fantastic conditions we missed the tuna.

There was a tuna 100yds behind the gear and we did see a couple of splashes, some bait balls and lots of birds. On the way back off Swanage we also spotted a pod of dolphins.

Probably a bit early in the season for us in our area but the weather and tide was too good not to try.

Another nice week. Quite unprecedented! It’ll all change when I chase them Tunas, you watch. In fact I will take money that 27th August will be a storm and it will last for two weeks. 😂😂

Anyway what a week of mainly lure fishing. Shallow, deep and along the cliffs, it’s been a blast.

Here are some pictures from the week that will tell the story far better than I can.

FYI - the odd space did come up, I updated my schedule on CBUK and the spaces were filled within a few hours. Thank you to all my loyal customers, you make that part of the job very very easy.

We had a very mixed bag when fishing this week again. There are fish to be caught but small and mostly inshore. We tried for plaice and failed so next fished the rocks for black bream, small congers, small po***ck, small Bass, plus the odd big mackerel, well Graham did!!

The Sharking on Friday started superbly with a nice estimated 100lb Thresher for Stuart, taking the bait soon after deploying the chum and oil. A bite off just behind the hook followed that and an identical bite off yesterday concluded our two day Sharking excursion. Offshore there was a complete lack of bait fish.

However the ridiculous amount of fry and small fish in the river at the moment is unbelievable. There were loads of gulls in the bay too which bodes well for next weeks Bassing.

One observation yesterday morning it seems that lots of boat owners have clued into fishing the bridge. I had to pick my way between them to get over. It was flat calm which helped but I’m sure YouTube vids have taught novices where and how to fish the same exact mark, with scenes of the lighthouse and Needles in the background. It’s great for us that they ignore all the other marks that are within a few miles.

Pictures are of Graham with his string of po***ck and Dave the Bream with a Ballan wrasse. That mark cost me an old anchor.

The Thresher Shark caught by Stuart played out nicely and gave and me a chance to practice with a long handled T Bar. Not easy!

Well it was a lovely week again. One big shark, likely a porbeagle, robbed our baits on three rods, all set at different depths. The shark was never hooked or did it hang around for long. This made for a short period of excitement and definitely looking more promising now. There were a lot more scad on this week’s chosen drift and a nice Ray took one of the dragged baits. Jigs accounted for some cracking plump bass as we drifted one mark but unable to leave our chum trail, we left them alone.

Bass and Bream were the target of the other trip and on the flattest of seas the fish were playing hard to get with Bass preferring live baits with small Tope jumping on too. Black Bream were found feeding like piranha inshore.

Not one trip cancelled in July ‘26, now that’s a first for me in 21 years!

What a lovely week on the water. Even got ahead of the power boat race for about 6 seconds!!

The Sharking trips to the West of the Wight found Tope to 30lb and some bits and pieces but no indications of the big sharks.

The fire on the Island near Alum Bay took some putting out but the boys did it and the damping down by helicopter and sea water seemed to stop the smouldering and reigniting.

Bottlenose dolphins were at the Light one morning and we were blessed with a lot of mackerel one day but it never converted to a hungry or nosey Porbeagle or Thresher.

That’s a lot of hard work chunking but we had a good go and scratched the itch. On Friday we caught a few Rays and more Tope.

Saturday the Tope were replaced by Congers!! Keith and Sammy were polite in their feedback but to not catch a Tope seemed impossible! I’m blaming it on the mackerel that Ben gave me 😂. Jokes as they didn’t take frozen or squid.

So a lovely week with great crews, next week looks really good too.

Well that wasn’t an easy few days chasing fish. We did plenty of miles had some decent fish over the three days, nothing spectacular but all good fun and in lovely weather. Nothing to complain about and exactly why it’s called fishing and not catching.
