Hurst Castle Sailing Club

Hurst Castle Sailing Club Hurst Castle Sailing Club is a small but lively and friendly club where the emphasis is on enjoyment rather than competition

It is found at Keyhaven, a tranquil hamlet a few miles west of Lymington in a scenic position at the head of a small estuary facing the Isle of Wight. There is a large public car-park adjacent to the Clubhouse. We give a warm welcome to people of all ages, with a range of boating interests and levels of experience. We are very much a family-oriented Club, almost entirely run on a mutual-help basi

The Club caters for both dinghy and yacht sailors. The most common dinghy sailed is the Scow, with over forty boats. There are also a number of Mirrors, Gulls, Enterprises, Wayfarers, Skippers, Wanderers, Lasers, Toppers and others. For those who do not (yet) own their own boats, the Club has several dinghies which are available to members for a nominal fee. We have over forty cruising members with boats ranging from 18 to 45 feet. The moorings in the creeks are administered by the District Council. Cruising is generally a very sociable occupation! The Club has a full summer sailing programme each year, with something during most weeks and at week-ends for the racing, cruising or ‘pottering’ sailor.

For the first time since 2023, we had the right weather for the Totland Interclub Sandcastle Competition. Fourteen teams from 5 different Clubs took part (HCSC, KYC, LTSC, RLymYC and YSC). On a glorious sunny day Totland is a worthy rival for any of the world’s most famous seaside beauty spots!

Push the Boat Out
An event that allows all craft and their crews to get on the water, with safety boats in attendance and have a go. Fun morning even though the wind became much stronger than expected.

The Island Sailing Club was delighted to welcome Mr R.D.Bagnall for a memorable visit, recounting his victory in the 1977 Round the Island Race aboard his winning yacht Silver Jubilee. There was definitely an appreciation for the legacy of wining the Gold Roman Bowl.

Mr Bagnall, recalled both the intensity of the competition and the camaraderie among sailors. He spoke fondly of the conditions on the day and the tactical decisions that led to his success. With a smile, he also addressed the long-standing rumours that his victory had been “a fix,” given the coincidence of winning during the Queen’s Jubilee year in 1977. While clearly amused by the speculation, he assured us that the triumph of Jubilee was hard-earned and entirely genuine.

In an unfortunate mix-up, on race day in 1977 Mr Bagnall’s twin brother had used his ISC dinner ticket, meaning that when Mr Bagnall arrived, his seat had already been taken. Mistaken for an uninvited guest, he was rather firmly escorted off the premises by the ISC security. The confusion was eventually resolved when his brother sheepishly confessed, prompting much laughter among those present. With the matter settled, Mr Bagnall was warmly welcomed back inside, and the evening continued in high spirits, becoming a story in its own right that was enjoyed by all.
