I had to be in South London for the past 24 hours so I couldn’t resist squeezing in a couple of swims at the wonderful where I bumped into the legendary ‘Lido Mike’ of and we chatted about the possibility of a South Coast collaboration next summer. Give us a shout back Mike if you’re up for planning some swim adventures on the south coast and around West Wight!

Our Iconic Swimmer for the month of September has to be Ted Ward, pictured here winning today’s 70.3 Ironman Weymouth.

Last weekend Ted was with swimming with us in Devon, second picture on the right (and last week’s post), here with a few of his training buddies from Precision Fuel and Hydration just before they set off on the 6km Bantham Swoosh from Aveton Gifford to Bigbury, completing that swim in just over one hour and hitting 100m split times barely over 60 secs in places, which is rapid, even taking account of the tide.

In his spare time 21 year-old Ted is also a RNLI lifeboat volunteer with the Lymington lifeboat crew. He’s a genuine “waterman” and definitely a name to watch in the years ahead. This is just the beginning for Ted we feel…

We had a blast swimming with this gang yesterday. Despite the breezy conditions we enjoyed three 1500m+ swims at different locations in flat calm water…thanks to our trusty safety rib “Tango” and a good knowledge of the various secret swim spots around Lymington and Milford-on-Sea.

Another incredible long weekend swimming with the amazing Milford-on-Sea Sea Swimmers down in South Devon, a place that never stops giving even though this was now our fifth visit. This year the highlight was the top-of-the-tide swim from Old Cellar beach 2000m back up the River Yealm to The Ship Inn in Noss Mayo where we finished by climbing out of the water up the steps into the beer garden and one of the swimmers produced a credit card from under his swim cap and bought a round of drinks for everyone.

This month’s celebrated Iconic Swimmer is New Forest sea swimming legend Ian Smith. Born in the Forest and raised on the shores of the Solent he knows the sea here as well as anyone and guides on our trips out to the Needles. Ian is also a 7am Hordle Cliff daily regular - all the year round!
