The best laid plans of mice and men…..

Often go awry!

To a Mouse, Robert Burns, 1785.

That is what happened today.

Three of us (Mark, Ross & Jake) left -on-Trent at silly o’clock, to travel to the Severn Bridge parkrun, to get the Welsh flag on our profiles.

We arrived at the new Services at 8am and enjoyed a relaxed coffee and chilled out at Starbucks. (Other coffee shops are available).

We left at 0830 with not a care in the world.

Then BOOM we bumped into a very nice young lady who spotted my parkrun baseball cap. 30 seconds later we realised that the Severn Bridge parkrun was CANCELLED. What? How come? You can’t be serious?

A quick look at the parkrun app and the event map, then we hit the road again hoping to get to Lydney parkrun in time for the start.

We arrived with 4 minutes to spare and just in time for Tim’s RD Brief.

The tourist prize went to a parkrunner from Australia. There is always one, isn’t there!

Tim explained that this week, it was ‘touch and go’ filling the volunteer roster. This prompted a HUGE round of applause for all volunteers today.

The course is 3 laps on a mixture of paths, grass, narrow woodland trails with a couple of cheeky ups n downs thrown in for good measure.

The first male finisher today was Arthur in 18:42 (PB)

The first female finisher today was Grace in 22:23

The first junior finisher today was Kai in 26.28 (PB)

The rest of us took our time to enjoy the great course and lovely venue.

Tim was our Run Director today. Didn’t he do an excellent job!

He was supported by a wonderful team of 22 volunteers that made today’s event possible. A huge ‘Thank You’ to you all.

So we missed our Welsh flag, but who cares, it’s a parkrun, what’s not to like!

For our tourist team, Jake recorded a new 5K PB and Ross recorded his fastest 5K this year.

Jake’s fiancé (my daughter Laura baked a special PB cake for him).

I missed out on a PB. Those days are over for me. The head says ‘Yes’ but the legs say ‘Dream On’!

Thank you for hosting a great parkrun today.

Next Saturday, Ross will making his debut as the Run Director at Coronation Park parkrun.

A glorious morning for our event this morning.

A huge thanks to those who met the call for volunteers! I have been asked to thank you all from the runners who said that you made the event so enjoyable.

Another thanks to all of those attending who made the event an enjoyable one. It's always pleasing, as RD, to get attendees to take time to thank me personally for such an enjoyable and welcoming event.

Finally, a big thank you on behalf of Alison Jones. She took a tumble in the woods and was very pleasantly surprised by the number of runners who stopped to check that she was OK and to later check up on her again after the finish. Thank you to all who left such a positive impression on one of our visitors.

This Saturday's PR is at risk of not going ahead as we currently have an incomplete volunteer roster. We do not want this to be the outcome for this or any other week but without a sufficient number of volunteers, we cannot safely deliver a PR event.

I travelled 60 miles from upon Avon, around an hour and a half, for my 450th and my 99th venue to attend event 490 at Boating Lake . Lydney Boating Lake is a mid-20th-century creation. Local leaders (including Viscount Bledisloe and Red & White bus company founder John Hylton Watts) transformed the former "East Marsh" into a public park by diverting water from the River Lyd. No boats today but lots of anglers.

We used the toilets at the town centre car park - ///convert.safety.dreading then parked at the (free) car park near B&M Stores as mentioned on the webpage ///paints.gilding.winners then walked the 5 minutes to the start line. We were early and received a lovely warm welcome from Run Director David. There is a unisex toilet at the parkrun.

Wow – I loved this parkrun. I beautiful sunny morning, 12 degrees and hardly any wind. Perfect for running (or walking).

This is a three lap course with an out-and-back start and finish. Firstly, run an almost complete anti-clockwise lap of the picturesque and very scenic lake, before bearing right and doubling back towards the pumping station. It is mostly flat with a mix of tarmac and stone paths, beautiful woodland trails sections plus a short sharp rise up toward the (narrow) canal path – keep right!. Watch for the stumps on the trail part. Yes, this parkrun has everything!

99 participants and 21 amazing volunteers this morning this morning. Two main takeaways for me from this parkrun – the beauty of the lake, the canal and the trail and secondly the friendliness offered. Thanks for welcoming me and I hope to visit again one day. For breakfast we went to Lydney Harbour cafe ///digital.feathers.thousands which I would highly recommend.
