Three Sisters Race Report: Wet Tyres, Battles and Some of our Best Results Yet in the Inters!
After we (read Dad) threw our teddies out of the pram at Rowrah due to the engine being under powered, the Inter had a newly rebuilt bottom end and setup so was performing brilliantly!!
What a weekend at Three Sisters!
We setup in with Sarah Harris Race School to get some tuition, mainly on the Metrakit but lots of tips and guidance to be had on the Mini too!!
Friday Practice
After a VERY stressful morning trying to get both bikes fitted with new wet tyres, finding new rims for the Metrakit and generally running around putting out fires, we finally made it onto the track and had an awesome day.
On the minibike, we were flying around and loving life. We lengthened the gearing several times and brought our lap times down to 58 seconds.
We also had another valuable practice day on the Metrakit, and we absolutely love this bike! We managed several 53-second laps. We’re still off the back of the main pack, but we’re very new to the bike and improving every time we ride it.
Friday was dry, but rain was forecast for Saturday’s qualifying. After the summer we’ve had, who knew it could still rain in the UK?
Saturday:
WE CAN RACE THE METRAKIT!!! All the hard work and practice has paid off, we're allowed to go out on race days as well as practice! Pretty sure we're NOT going to be competing for many points, but we can be out there, taking part and learning!!
Qualifying and Race 1
Both bikes were prepared for wet conditions overnight.
During the first minibike qualifying session, the rear tyre felt as though it was losing pressure. It had been a while since we’d ridden in the wet, so we weren’t initially sure whether it was the tyre or simply the lack of grip.
We replaced the tyre and valve before Qualifying 2, which was another wet session. Our times were coming down and we were loving it, but when the throttle opened through Turn 2, the rear spun and Immy came off.
Once the bike was back in the paddock, we found the problem immediately: the new valve stem/core hadn’t been tightened properly and had been leaking air throughout both sessions! We qualified 14th and were absolutely gutted.
Metrakit qualifying was much more positive. We put in some of our fastest times during the wet first session and weren’t even last! The circuit dried for Qualifying 2, which pushed us to the back of the grid. We still couldn’t believe we’d been faster than some riders in the wet. It was almost a shame the track dried!
In Minibike Race 1, we had a brilliant battle with the girls and moved from 14th to 12th. Izzy unfortunately had bike trouble and had to leave the track, but we loved every lap around Three Sisters.
In the Metrakit race, we produced several 52-second laps and felt increasingly comfortable. We can now hold onto the group for a while, but mistakes begin to creep in as the race progresses. That will improve with more time on the bike. We finished last, but loved every second of every lap!
Sunday
Minibike practice was completely uneventful. Nothing to see here at all! We went out on wet tyres, enjoyed ourselves and definitely didn’t slide off directly in front of Dale the photographer…
Before Race 2, some issues meant we were sent back to the paddock. Not everyone made it back in time for the start, so several riders had to begin from the rear of the grid. Despite that, we improved our times and finished 10th out of 15!
Race 3 produced our best result of the weekend: 9th place from 14th on the grid!
There was some confusion when a broken or glitching sign displayed a chequered flag, causing a few riders to ease off during the closing laps. Thankfully, we don’t think it affected the final results.
For Metrakit Race 2, we had changed the gearing overnight but, honestly, made the wrong call. We’re not yet experienced enough to carry the corner speed needed to benefit from the taller gearing. Our lap times were slower and we finished last, but we were still learning, still having fun and still living our best life!
We changed the gearing back for Race 3, which brought some improvement. The Alfano dash mount broke immediately before the race, though, so we had to go old-school and ride entirely by feel!
A special shout-out to Keely and Izzy for battling with us throughout the weekend, and to Dani for not giving us too much abuse for lapping us on the Metrakit!
Most importantly, congratulations to Austin Racing #100 for absolutely smashing it and dominating the Inters. His performance was nothing short of awesome!
A weekend of problems, changing weather, crashes, lessons and progress, topped off with a ninth-place finish. We’re still learning, still improving and still loving every lap.
