A really interesting UK bowlers survey has just dropped… and it’s got me thinking:
Are we starting to lose focus on what made our sport great in the first place?
There’s no doubt we need to move forward, attracting younger players, increasing visibility, adapting formats… all important.
But here’s the uncomfortable question:
In trying to grow, are we drifting away from the culture that keeps people staying?
Bowls has always been about:
👉 Community
👉 Belonging
👉 A relaxed, social environment
👉 Feeling part of something — not just turning up to play
And while sustainability matters, are we sometimes putting too much weight on the numbers… and not enough on the member experience behind them?
Because long term, it’s the experience that keeps people coming back, not just the balance sheet.
So I’m curious…
- Do these survey results reflect what’s happening at your club?
- How are you balancing modernisation with tradition?
- Are decisions being driven more by finances or by what members actually want?
- What have you seen work when trying to evolve without losing identity?
What can we do as a sport to support both growth and culture, without one undermining the other?
Feels like this is a conversation worth having across clubs right now 👇
