🗣️ UP-DATE RE PROPOSED PEDESTRIAN CROSSING AT HAYLING DRIVE.
On the 24th April Luton Council advised us in the interest of safety of residents that a zebra crossing was due to be installed at the entrance to the building site at Hayling Drive
by the end of May, when this didn’t happened we contacted the Council enquiring about the zebra crossing.
We have now been advised of the following by Luton Council that the Council's Highways Department has reassessed the plan for the zebra crossing and has proposed the alternative solution, see below for residents safety :
All vehicles will be marshalled by a dedicated banksman located at the site gate.
No deliveries or vehicle movements will be allowed at the gate during morning and afternoon school drop-off and collection times.
No vehicles will be allowed to park around the site entrance at any time in order to maintain line of sight for pedestrians.
New signage is being installed, along with double yellow lines.
A physical barrier will be installed perpendicular to the right-hand footpath (as viewed from the road, to the right of the gate). The purpose of this barrier is to prevent pedestrians from crossing the carriageway at an oblique angle, away from the gate, where they are outside the banksman's immediate sightline and where crossing distances are greater. The barrier will channel pedestrians toward the gate frontage where the banksman can see them, the crossing distance is shortest, and the banksman's operating procedure provides the greatest degree of protection.
Why has it taken this long for the Council's Highways Department to re-assess the pedestrian safety issue at the site entrance at Hayling Drive - they must have been aware of the situation for at least the last six months, where was their forward planning ?
Note it only only says ' proposed ' - so goodness only knows when it will actually be in place. Watch this space, we will keep you updated.
Thankyou.
