Tactical tips.
Key points to break through a low defensive block
1. Create width — keep wingers wide to stretch the defensive line.
2. Occupy the half-spaces — use your No. 10/8s between the fullback and centre-back.
3. Move the defence — circulate the ball and switch sides quickly.
4. Use overloads — create 2v1 or 3v2 situations on one flank.
5. Attack the gaps — once a defender steps out, immediately attack the space behind him.
6. Use third-man combinations — one-touch passes and wall passes can break compact lines.
7. Vary the striker's movement — drop deep, run behind, or drag a CB away.
8. Attack the box with timing — don't have everyone arrive at once; stagger runs.
9. Prefer cutbacks — when reaching the byline, look for cutbacks rather than hopeful crosses.
10. Switch play rapidly — overload one side, draw the block across, then exploit the opposite side.
11. Be patient, but play forward when the gap appears — don't force passes into a packed defence.
12. Maintain defensive balance — keep a 3+2 rest defence whenever possible.
13. Counterpress immediately after losing the ball — prevent the opponent's first counterattack.
14. Don't overcommit both fullbacks — normally allow one to stay deeper.
Simple attacking formula
Stretch → Overload → Move the block → Find the gap → Accelerate → Finish
And the defensive principle:
Attack with numbers, but always leave a 3+2 safety structure behind the ball.
