It's World Ocean Day 🌊

Our oceans may seem distant, mystical & full of unknown secrets but they're health is vital for all life on Earth. We cannot survive without these incredible ecosystems!

In 2022, the UK committed to 30x30, a target set under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, with the intention of protecting and conserving 30% of all the world's land and seas by 2030 🗓️

As of April 2026, 10.01% of our oceans are now protected by law 🙌 It's an important milestone but our oceans still need our help which is why today is so important to raise awareness 🐬💙

Did you know that Britain and Ireland support a significantly large portion of the global Eurasian Oystercatcher population?

Approximately 96,000 pairs breed here during spring and summer but their numbers peak during the colder months. It's estimated that around 600,000 Oystercatchers overwinter here, that's a third of their global population!

Whilst they may be a familiar sight around our coastal and farmland habitats sadly, like many migratory waders, their numbers are declining and they are currently assessed as a Vulnerable Species of European Conservation Concern.

There are many times when a Speckled Wood is resting on the path right in front of you, but you don’t see it until it flies and catches your eye. Named for their dappled colours that look like a partially sunlit forest path, Speckled Woods are forest specialists. As well as spending time basking on the ground, males often perch higher where they can launch themselves at a passing rival and fly in rapid spirals. Speckled Woods have several broods throughout the year, so can be seen from the beginning of spring right up until late autumn. They’re also one of few British butterflies which can overwinter as a caterpillar or a pupa.

📢 Ambassador announcement 📢

We're thrilled to share that Becca Heywood is the latest ambassador to join the Opticron team. Welcome on board!

Becca is a London-based wildlife enthusiast, dedicated to making birdwatching and wildlife feel accessible to everyone.

Becca grew up in a family of keen birders, developing a love of wildlife that she carried (quietly) into adulthood, before relaunching it publicly when she began posting as Birds with Becca in December 2025.

In her professional life, she works in diversity, equity and inclusion, and is a professional coach, and that same instinct shapes everything she creates: no gatekeeping, no jargon, and no judgement or expectation to have all the answers. Her content reaches a growing audience of people who love nature but haven’t always felt like they belonged in traditional wildlife spaces.

The Opticron Aurora BGA VHD 10x42 might genuinely be the point where people finally understand the whole 10x42 thing 👀

You spot something in the distance… lift these up… and suddenly you’re seeing details you completely missed before.

Enough reach to feel immersive, without feeling like you’re carrying a brick around your neck all day.

So be honest… are you team 8x42 or 10x42?

Whitethroats are summer migrants to Britain, arriving towards the end of April and staying until autumn. A subtle bird with camouflaged plumage, they can often be heard singing their jumbled songs from dense shrubbery. The white throat is a giveaway, seen on both males and females. Similar to other warbler species, Whitethroats appear around scrub & hedgerows, where they perch and hunt for insects. During other times of the year, they also feed on fruit, in particular berries.
