It's a sad weekend in the history of Lurgan United as we took the decision to inform the Mid Ulster League that we will no longer compete this season. We've had a difficult time as of late to field a competitive squad, and this decision wasn't easy.
It's no secret that we registered a team of players in the Lonsdale league, and that this team will still compete. The team was a group of friends who wanted to enjoy football at a lower level with the potential of winning more cups and even the league. A chance to build a strong squad to then qualify for a reserve side back into the Reserve divisions of the Mid Ulster next season. Our logic was right, the perception seemed wrong.
At any club the priority is to facilitate a first team. We know this. Our setup at the start of the season was good. We were strong. We attracted a brilliant management team. We signed skilled players. We competed against good sides. We had players willing to pull on the badge and play. And that's what makes a club - the players. As any Game of Thrones fan will tell you - Winter is coming. Winter took a very heavy toll on us. We lost players through injury, through family commitments, through work commitments and we began to struggle. We didn't have the depth in the squad and we couldn't look to our reserves as they weren't eligible for Mid Ulster.
For decisions made before their time we lost the management duo of Toby and Disco but we thank them for their wholesome efforts. For indiffernces in the comittee side of things Sean O'Neil and Olga submitted their resignations from the committee and club. Sean was a stalwart of Lurgan United for over 30 years and personally seen the club through many changes and challenging times. He worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the club going. I had the pleasure to play alongside him in my early years at Lurgan United and he was a formidable defensive player that never lost a header. He currently Chairs the Mid Ulster League and does so with the same fortitude he had for Lurgan United. All the very best to him and Olga.
Now we concentrate on fielding a reformed squad and finish the season with possible Silverware and qualify and meet the criteria for registration back into Mid Ulster next season. We won't be away for long.
Our constitution states we have 5 people on our committee. We welcome and ask anyone past or present who wants to volunteer their time and join us to launch Lurgan United back to their best and continue our historic presence in Lurgan and the local area.
We face a steady Richhill Afc Colts side away in the quarter final of the 15 T-Street Cup tomorrow and welcome all support. UTLR's
