Congratulations to both Harry and George Smith for their efforts at the Welsh U14s Championships held at Carmarthen GC this past week. Going into the final round Harry was top of the leaderboard and George was T15th.
After an excellent second round George vaulted himself into the top 10 and finished in 9th place. At only 12 years old, competing against lads 2 years older, a fantastic achievement at such a young age at national level. Well done George.
Harry got off to a shaky start in the final round, with the lad in second starting with an eagle on the first hole of day. With just 4 holes of the final round gone, Harry was 4 shot behind. However, from there on came some brilliant golf. A lot of fairways and greens heaped the pressure back on his opponent. Harry showed immense mental strength and after a ridiculous up and down par save any professional would have been proud of, he had overturned the deficit to be in contention going into the final hole. But for a 25ft birdie hole out from a player in the group in front, Harry would have been crowned champion and not T2.
Although not the result Harry was looking for at the start of the day, as is his competitive persona, this is still a brilliant achievement on the national stage.
Harry now turns his attention to the Gareth Bale Championships at Celtic Manor at the end of September, going up age category to compete against the best U16 and U18 Welsh players.
Congratulations both Harry and George, you continue to represent the club with great credit and we couldn’t be more proud of you both. Some big wins are just around the corner.
