SITWELL CUP FINAL 2026 🏆

Last weekend saw our second to last Club Knockout Final of 2026 completed, with Alfie Green taking on George Griffiths in the final of the Sitwell Cup.

The Sitwell Cup is always split into two stages - a medal competition with the top 16 making it through to the knockout stages, making for a long and challenging route to the final. The match was very close for most of the round until the 15th where Alfie won the 15th & 16th back to back.

Alfie then halved the 17th to secure the victory 2&1! 👏

Congratulations to Alfie on winning the Sitwell Cup! An incredible achievement and a fantastic trophy to start his collection.

After qualifying for the knockout and then progressing through 3 rounds to make the final George Griffiths, still only 15 years old, can hold his head high as he has had a fantastic season with multiple trophies already (Tommy Adams Cup & Earl of Plymouth & Junior Cup)

Congratulations to Ludlow members Ross Magill and Alex Allen for helping Shropshire & Herefordshire County 1st team on winning the Midlands League for the first time in 18 years.

Also well done to Ludlow members George Watton, Darren Humphries and Dave Fish for having a great season playing for the 2nd team and finishing tied 1st in the league!

On behalf of Ludlow Golf Club, well done to SHUGC County 1st team & 2nd team.

The 1st & 2nd S&H teams were playing their last matches of the season in the Midland Golf Union league. The 1st team match at The Herefordshire GC vs Warwickshire in the morning foursomes S&H won 3pts - 2pts. With Captain, Tom Kerr seeking a quick start in the afternoon it was left to the later order to push the team over the line as the first 4 matches were unable to register a point with the 5 points needed coming from the last 6 games giving S&H a nerve racking 8-7 win which was enough for S&H 1st team to win their first league title in 18 years !

1st Team Captain Tom Kerr and President Nigel Chesters both spoke after the game of the immense pride in seeing S&H get over the line for only the 2nd time, coincidently the last title came in 2008 was captained by current president Nigel Chesters !

Tom Kerr also stated it had been a massive team effort throughout the year and all players who had represented the team this year are responsible for the title, whilst also thanking those who had supported, not only this year, but previous years as well.

The 2nd team also had a chance to win their league v Warwickshire 2nd's at Kenilworth GC. The morning foursomes went S&H way winning 3.5pts-1.5pts

The afternoon singles also went S&H way with the singles being split honours even at 5-5, giving an overall result 8.5pts-6.5pts, unfortunatley Worcesters 2nd also won meaning S&H finished tied 1st losing out on game difference.

Whilst it was dissapointing to miss out on the league by such fine margins Captain James Platford was keen to point to everyones incredible contributions to his 2 year tenure and an incredible team cohesion.

Both captains, players and the committee would like to thank all the clubs for their courtesy in hosting games over the last year and thanks everyone for their support.

Scratch Knockout Success for Harry Smith 🏆

Yesterday saw the final of the Club Scratch knockout, involving one of our juniors Harry Smith against Mark Sutcliffe.

In what was a tightly contested match, Mark had a lead of 1up with the 9 holes left to play. Neither player could get any momentum, until the 14th. Harry 2dwn with 5 to play managed to win 14 and 15 to get back on level terms. Mark then sunk a brilliant 25ft putt on 16 to gain the upper hand and have a 1 hole advantage with 1 to play.

As he has shown in the last few days, Harry’s brilliant mental strength and play managed to force the tie to a playoff. Very fitting of such a close match.

Both players managed to par the 1st playoff hole but it was Harry who held his nerve to win down the 2nd.

Commiserations go out to Mark, who played a great final and in the right spirit.

A brilliant performance and congratulations Harry on becoming Ludlow GC’s youngest ever scratch knockout winner.

Well done to Wren and Leni!! 👏

Congratulations to Wren Humphries who on Monday was part of the winning Shropshire Girls Midland North Region Handicap league Team. The finale was at Branston GC where Shropshire played their final game against Nottinghamshire. Wren won her match 7&5 which meant she went the whole season unbeaten with 4 wins and 1 draw.
Little sister Leni played in the 9 hole event at Branston on Monday, her first game for Shropshire girls.
Well done both, the improvements you are making is great to see.

CLARE CUP FINAL 2026 🏆

Following on from yesterday’s Abraham Cup Final, we had our second Men’s Knockout Final completed today and another fantastic match to round off the weekend!

After losing out to Josh Morgan in yesterday’s Abraham Cup Final, George Smith was straight back into action alongside Nick Apperley, taking on Josh’s Dad and Brother, Gareth and Ben Morgan, in the final of the Clare Cup.

Played in the foursomes format, George and Nick came out on top with a 2&1 victory to lift the Clare Cup! 👏

It’s a particularly special win for George, who has now won the Clare Cup twice in the last three years, having previously lifted the trophy in 2024.

Nick also has an impressive history with the competition, having won the Clare Cup back-to-back in 2014 and 2015. More than a decade later, he’s added another Clare Cup victory to his name!

Congratulations to George and Nick, our 2026 Clare Cup Champions! 🏆👏 And commiserations to Gareth and Ben after a great run to the final.

Two knockout finals, two fantastic matches and two trophies decided! What a weekend of match play at Ludlow! ⛳️
