June 6 and 7th - June Regatta
With a forecast of 30-35 knots, wind against tide, and heavy rain, all the competitors were very thankful to see the "no sailing today" signal on Saturday morning.
Sunday: Three races planned, in a westerly off-shore breeze of 18 dropping to 12 knots.
The first start saw a crowded starboard end of the line - with Croc (Chris and Gill Jordan) 2 lengths early and heading back, Clever Dick 2 feet early and circling around the port end pin, and Brimstone (Bryan and Jenny Riley) hitting the line just perfect. Up the beat (careful not to overstand the windward mark, with the tide setting across the course), Croc pulled up to 3rd, and on the second beat just pipped Squffy (Veronica and Ben Falat) for a single cross - before Squffy slipped around the mark for a steady 2nd place. Meanwhile Richard Sullivan in Clever Dick was giving crew for the day David Gale lots of practise at circling, in 5th place, with Marc and Joe Moncrieff in Maverick in 4th. Chris Williams was busy doing the foredeck dance on Spring Maid sorting out the spinnaker halyard for Sue in 6th.
The second start saw the fleet better spread on the line. Croc once again early - so stopped at the starboard end, while Squffy hit the port end of the line at speed and took clear wind and the right tacking point up the beat and into the lead. Croc just pipped Brimstone to the windward mark, but slipped back to 3rd down the run, just keeping enough clear wind to keep Clever Dick in 4th.
The third race saw Squffy challenging hard off the start line, but Brimstone was quick enough through the lumpy sea at the windward mark to win the race and the event. Maverick claimed a new first for the race - managing to hit both ends of the leeward gate!
Overall results of Brimstone with Squffy just one point behind, then Croc, Clever Dick and Maverick (all discarding a 5th place) and Spring Maid.
All boats were craned out and prize giving completed by 15:00, with Richard Fryer (Race Officer and Commodore), thanking Owen Delaney (deputy Race Officer) and the other helpers.

Making best use of the beautiful Saturday afternoon conditions; blue skies, lovely wind, ebbing tide, calm seas the RNSYC Squib fleet was out racing just off the south beach. Supported by the race officers on the committee boat, Skylark, and the safety boat, East Point One.

The close keenly contested racing just offshore was a colourful spectacle with spinnakers flying, red sails resplendent in the bright sunlight.

A fantastic afternoon on the water enjoyed by one and all.

Calm seas and no wind delayed the start of the Laser (ILCA) open on Saturday morning.

However, things changed around lunchtime as the wind filled in to provide a good north easterly. The 12 strong Laser fleet headed to sea and enjoyed three back-to-back races off the beach at Pakefield, supported by volunteers on Skylark (committee / start boat) and several safety boats.

A great day of enjoyable and competitive ILCA racing!

First day of racing at sea for 2026, and what a cracker of a day! Sunshine, a steady NNE wind blowing between 10 and 12 knots, and a high tide on the last of the flood (wind with tide, so a nice flat sea). John Bird the Race Officer apologised for the short length of course due to the sand banks and wind direction - but the 5 Squibs felt that between 3 and 4 times the length of the beat they were used to on Oulton Broad, it was just perfect!

Before we even got to the start there was a little bit of excitement - when Croc (Chris and Gill Jordan) hoisted their spinnaker, they found the halyard cleat (which the builder had removed in order to paint the floor) had been put back again the wrong way round - allowing slow hoists and rapid drops as soon as the kite filled!. A fast EP1 (with Stuart Brown, Bob Girling and a screw driver) allowed us to remove and replace it. Luckily the last 3 boats had been held in the Yacht Basin to allow a wind farm boat to leave the harbour, so everything was fixed ready for the race.
The start line was perfect - with awkward decisions to be made. Nearer the Committee boat (which was at the port end) gave the best chance to get to the beach first, as well as the best chance to snag the anchor line and be stranded! The starboard end gave clear wind for the long starboard tack into the beach. Maverick (Marc Moncrieff and Kerr Sinclair) were the bravest, started at the port end, and sailed very slightly free to reach the beach first, tack onto port and clear the oncoming starboard boats. Next into the beach was Brimstone (Bryan and Jenny Riley), but it was the high pointing Croc who took 2nd place. Squffy (Veronica and Ben Falat) were just 1/4 boat length late at the start, and found themselves squeezed out by Brimstone and covered by Croc, so had to put in a wind clearing tack too early. Spring Maid (Chris Williams and John) lost out at the start due to lack of winter practise, and had a wonderful sail watching the antics happen just ahead of them.

Croc headed out from the beach for the long tack to the windward mark first, and the extra 10 yards that Brimstone went up the beach allowed them to slip around the buoy in 2nd, with Maverick still going very fast down the run.
Maverick controlled the next beat and short tacks up the shore just right, as well as judging when to head for the windward mark perfectly again - but the 2nd run saw Brimstone going very fast to leeward and they slipped into the lead with just the final lap to go. Croc decided to hit the leeward buoy, (surely nothing to do with the helm!) and after their spin they found themselves far enough back to try something different on the final beat - which didn't work and allowed Squffy through into 3rd place. Although Croc's helm did get things (and the final 5 degree shift into the mark) sorted to get 3rd back before the final run.

The second race saw less tide, but still just enough to make the dash to the beach worth while. Croc came off the middle of the line with clear wind, and was pointing high enough to take the lead at the first crossing point, despite Squffy and Brimstone reaching the shallows first. The race quickly settled into 2 match races - with Croc just staying ahead of Brimstone for the next 2 laps, and Squffy just pipping Maverick for 3rd. Always tricky for the leader down the run!
A long beat back up the coast to the harbour and lift out was made easier as the north-going ebb had just started to run.
