Challenge completed!!

Can think of better ways to spend a May Bank Holiday than in the cold and wet, completing the second half of the Captain Tom 100 Challenge.

However thank you to club members and friends who have supported this challenge by contributing to the Just Giving page and the club sweepstake for club funds.

The current Just Giving total is £230 plus Gift Aid of £37.50. Thank you. There is still time to contribute as the page is open until 6 May using https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lowdhambc-captain-tom-100-challenge

The final score over the 100 ends was John 60 Lowdham BC 120. Therefore the aggregate shots were 180. The sweepstake prize of £24 was won by Keith Perkins.

Big thank you again to all contributions and supporters who came on both days and particularly those that braved the conditions today

So halfway through the Captain Tom 100 end Challenge. It has been a good day with many club members supporting during the day. Thanks to everybody who has contributed to the Just Giving page and given cash which will be added to the page.

I think that there may be some more interest in the sweepstake tomorrow but I will only be taking guesses before the start of play at 10.30.

Hope to see more supporters there tomorrow, although the weather forecast doesn’t look promising.

Bowls is back!! After a somewhat condensed season last year we are hopefully looking forward to a full season of bowls at Lowdham Bowling Club.
The green opened last weekend and a few members have enjoyed getting out again and back into the game.
Team matches will start from May 17 when we are able to meet in greater numbers, all still within Government guidelines.
This weekend the club will be taking part in the Captain Tom 100 Challenge with Club Chairman John Higgins attempting to play 100 ends of 4 bowl singles over two days on Sunday and Monday. He will be challenged by other club members playing him in 10 matches of 10 ends each. Sponsorship for this event can be made through Just Giving at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lowdhambc-captain-tom-100-challenge
Thank you to club members who have volunteered to play and also those who have contributed already.
As an aside to this challenge there will be a sweepstake to guess the total number of shots scored over the 100 ends. Guesses to be entered on a sheet on the notice board outside of the clubhouse, £1 per guess. The guess nearest the aggregate score will win 50% of the kitty, with the other half going to club funds.
Keep a look out on this page next week to find out how John got on with his challenge.

Didn’t realise it was so long since my last update, so here is the latest news.
This afternoon’s roll up proved very successful with 10 members turning up, with some coming for their first bowl of the season. Monday roll ups will continue until the end of the season (next two weeks), so make sure you are there on time.
We were also joined this afternoon by 6 Lowdham residents having a taster session. They thoroughly enjoyed it and we hope to see them again when the new season starts in April.
The finals of the three singles competitions we have organised will be held this weekend. The original idea was to have these finals all on Saturday with a new Singles League Play Off competition on Sunday. However Alan has managed to get into all three finals, and we can’t expect anyone to play three matches in one day. So there will be two finals plus one of the semi-finals of the playoffs on Saturday and the remaining singles final, other play off semi-final and final on Sunday.
Alan plays Ivan in two finals and Pam in the other.
At the time of writing there is only one confirmed player in the playoffs, Ivan has won all three of his matches in Division One, so he is Division One champion. The other three will play each other this week to play for second place (it could depend on shot difference).
Division Two is similar John and Margaret have each won 2 matches. Brian still has two to play and if he wins both, then there will be a three way tie, again to be decided on shot difference.
Nothing has been decided yet in Division Three with the all the remaining matches to be played this week.
I will update later this week with full timetable of Finals Weekend and final Singles League tables

19/08/2020

The second round of matches in the Singles League finished on Sunday with a double header featuring Stephen Higgins. A narrow loss against Paul Morris (21-18) was followed by a narrow win against Steve Malcolm (21-19). This meant that the winner of Division 2 for this round was Paul Morris with an unbeaten record. But the other three had won one and lost one against each other, meaning the remaining promotion spot and two relegation places being decided on shot difference.
Promoted was Steve Malcolm (shot difference -3) and relegated were Stephen (-8) and Martin (-11).
So now for the third and final round of matches in this Singles League. At the end of this round there will be an extra Singles League Play-Off competition to be held on Sunday 6 September involving the Winners and Runners Up of Divisions 1 and 2.
The three Singles Competitions have all reached the Semi-Final stages with Alan and Ivan being still involved in all three (although they actually played each other yesterday in the Open 4 Woods with Alan winning). The finals of these competitions will be on Saturday 5 September.

14/08/2020

Update on the Singles League after the second round of matches are almost completed. All games have been played in division one and three, two remaining games in division two to be played on Sunday afternoon.
Starting at the bottom, division three, unfortunately Jim had to withdraw on medical advice and the division was contested by the remaining three. Promoted are John Higgins and Jill Richards.
Division two will be reconciled on Sunday. Whatever the results of Sundays matches are, Paul Morris will be promoted with the other promotion place still up for grabs. The scenarios too complicated for this update.
Division one is much clearer, staying up are Ivan and Pam (Ivan unbeaten) and unfortunately dropping down are Brian and Margaret.
We're just off for a break this weekend, but will update all the Singles Leagues results, competitions updates and hopefully news of a forthcoming event (keep you guessing) early next week

There is nothing finer on a warm summer evening than a game of bowls and a cold glass of your favourite tipple. That’s what we had at Bottesford last night.
Big thanks to our friends at Bottesford for organising this friendly and for their hospitality. Also thanks to the Lowdham members for supporting the fixture. The Covid protocols were well thought out and adhered to by everybody. Although the result is really irrelevant we did win on 2 rinks, drew on 1 and lost on 1 but lost overall.
There is one more fixture to be played tomorrow in the first week of Round Two of the Singles League so I will update you on what’s been happening in that and the other singles competitions tomorrow. Unfortunately on medical advice Jim has had to forfeit his remaining matches in Division 3, but we hope he will be back fit and well for Round Three
