Here are the step-by-step instructions for tying a martial arts belt to form a reef knot, as detailed in the image:
Tying the Belt
Step 1: Position the belt center
Find the middle of the belt by folding it in half.
Place the center of the belt on your navel (belly button).
Step 2: Wrap around the back
Wrap both ends of the belt around your body, crossing them over at your back.
Bring both ends back around to the front of your waist, ensuring they are of even length.
Step 3: Begin the knot
Bring the right end over and across the top of the left end.
Step 4: Tuck under all layers
Push the end that is now on top (originally the right end) under and up through all the belt layers and the uniform fabric, from bottom to top.
Step 5: Pull to form a loop
Pull this end down towards the other end of the belt to create a loose loop.
Pull snugly so the belt is tight but comfortable around your waist.
Step 6: Complete the knot
Cross the hanging left end upwards over the right end.
Pass this end through the loop you just formed to create a reef (square) knot.
Step 7: Tighten and adjust
Pull both ends of the knot tight by pulling them firmly outward (side to side).
Make sure the final knot is centered, square, and flat, with both ends hanging evenly in length to finish.
