"Will exercise make my hips worse?"
This is one of the most common questions I hear.
And it's a completely understandable concern.
If your hips are already painful, stiff or weak, the last thing you want to do is make things worse.
The good news?
The right exercise, done at the right level, is often one of the best things you can do for your hips.
The key is safe progression.
Too many people think exercise has to mean pushing through pain, doing intense workouts or performing exercises they're not ready for.
That's not how I work.
I meet people where they are.
If someone struggles to get out of a chair, that's where we start.
If someone lacks balance, we use support.
If someone is recovering from surgery, we progress at a pace that is appropriate for them.
The goal is not to see how much you can do today.
The goal is to build a stronger, more resilient body over time.
Small improvements add up.
A little more strength.
A little more mobility.
A little more confidence.
Before long, everyday activities become easier and less intimidating.
I've worked with people waiting for hip replacement surgery, people recovering from surgery and people who simply want to move better as they age.
What they all have in common is this:
They started where they were.
Not where they wished they were.
If you're worried about exercising with hip pain, remember that the right programme should build confidence, not fear.
And confidence grows one step at a time.
