Just a little something special
I got a request for a longbow with light coloured horn nocks with some embellishment with abalone shell.
This is a pic of the Ox horn top nock final version with an Abalone shell disc inset into each side.
It took several goes to get an acceptable offering , just need a final polishing then it is good to go.
The fact is it took longer to make the final nocks than it did the rest of the longbow.
I am sure my customer will be very happy with it.

I was just saying the other night to some club members about the woods I use in my bow making and the subject of Snakewood came up and I said I had made very slim 60 pound plus Tri laminate with bamboo backing and a tapered Purpleheart core with this beautiful Snakewood belly .
Finished with cow horn nocks .
The trouble is , it's too beautiful to shoot as I will never get enough decent Snakewood to do another ..
But I thought I'd share a couple of pics

Very important notice
I have as my followers have seen been showing my work on a Victorian style Carriage longbow.
Once question I did not have an answer to was the question of eligibility for competitions .
These longbows are made to conform to all the usual longbow rules such as
the single sweep curve from grip to nock
Made from wood including bamboo
Tipped with horn nocks
Meet the 5/8 depth to width ratio rule for the limbs
I've been making English Longbows for more than 35 years so would not expect an issue with compliance.
Now I did ask the question of eligibility of the carriage longbow of the Archery UK forum .

Opinions varied but Rob Barton kindly asked Archery GB that exact question for me and their response was direct and clear

the Carriage longbow was an recognised acceptable form of the English longbow for competition as far as Archery GB are concerned.
Excellent news since I now propose to take orders for these very special Longbows..
Contact me for details .

After a few months of development I have delivered my first Carriage Longbow .
It is a bamboo backed Hard white Maple core with a lemonwood belly.
45 #@28 inches and max of 30 inches..
The lower limb ferrule is stainless steel and the upper ferrule is machined from a 35 mm x 35 mm block of Brass, the upper limb now completely fits into the ferrule.
With a bit of extra build up the lower ferrule now matches the lower limb size and shape .
Here it's covered by a dark brown laced leather grip , providing same look and feel as all my longbows .
The turned index pin is also made from solid brass.
I am very proud of this project and I have one more already ordered.
It does take a good few hours to make the fittings but that will reduce with more practice but the upper ferrule took more than 3 hours for me to cut out the top socket on my mill and then turn down to the appropriate fit for the lower ferrule and bore out to receive the lower limb wood .
I did take it easy as one mistake and you have to start again from scratch.
All in all it has gone extremely well and a big thank you to Fred my first customer who stuck with me while I tried out many ideas to get this project sorted, as we discussed ideas and design improvements.

Here's the latest finished Carriage longbow grip .

Hi everyone , I will be making just a couple of Osage orange heavy poundage longbows (warbow style) 60 plus upto 80 lb there abouts.
The bows will be custom made bamboo backed core of Purpleheart or Hard white Maple with a belly of this amazing Osage orange.
The bows will sold as bows only with two fast flight strings a cord stringer and carry a six month warranty.
You can have a leather grip of your colour choice or not .
I cannot afford to use too much of this outstanding Osage on these bows as I'm committing to making more of the lesser poundage bows for us mere mortals.

I've listed two on eBay ,contact me directly if you want one .

Here it is it's a beauty, the Osage orange has a real depth to it's colour once hot waxed.
I think the striking contrast with the Maple and Purpleheart compliments the Osage and Bamboo.
The Osage orange is a tough bow wood and it's denser than the lemonwood so the bow is a little heavier than a standard bow and hence the poundage can be higher without baulking up the bow .
More about it later.
Now for sale as custom made Osage bellied longbows on here and eBay ,
For example s 50 # at 30 inch Tri laminate bamboo backed with a Purpleheart core and a Osage belly purchased directly through PayPal would be £450.00 Inc 12 arrows.
A quad Laminate 65 lb at 32 inches bamboo backed and cores of say Maple and Purpleheart with Osage belly
£470.00 with 12 arrows .
Both are subject to shipping costs contribution of £20.00.

I am about to post some pictures tonight here and on eBay of a Osage bellied quad laminate longbow.
It's a bamboo backed with cores of maple and purple heart and with a stunning golden belly .
And before anyone says they will buy this one .it's mine all mine .
But it will show off these very special longbows either quad or Tri laminate Osage bellied bows .
