This is lily have her physio today … when a horse has a big release they have a big yawn !
She had lots of tension round her head .
Most of you know this is my mare that had a beautiful challenge foal last year .
In the last 12 weeks she had started coming back into work.
She was quite thin , no muscle and lacking in energy due to being a great mothering and putting all her energy in a big foal.
So we left her 4 weeks to just be a horse , relax wind down after being a fab mother.
We started her new diet of of pink mash which has all the nutrition in without any rubbish (like us eating tofu chicken and veg very good for us but not as tasty as a McDonald’s so takes a while to get used to it ) and a vitamin e supplement .
We started long reining on the hilly roads which helps buildup top line and strengthen core. the roads are great to get the horses walking in forward straight lines.
We have also been doing in hand work over poles to build up core muscle.
While we have been doing this we have been on a plan with my great physio Tracey starting every week now every 2 weeks to help build her muscle up evenly and release any tension and her body changes from mum bod to athelete.
Then 2 weeks ago her behaviour changed and she stopped wanting the bridle on or head collar most people would have said it was just behavioural and she wasn’t wanting to work … but we have to listen to our horses when they try telling us something .
So I have her teeth rechecked ( only done 2 months ago ) and she had 2 mobile wolf teeth which were causing her pain. these have been removed.
This week due to not being able to use the bridle yet we have been desensatising to the saddle walking round the yard with gill leading me on her and she has been very relaxed. Next week we will be starting hacking .
It’s so important that horses coming back into work we treat them from stretch again : nutrition , body work , ground work , mentally , checking tack and desensitisation . And also slowly give them time to fitten up and find their feet as a working horse. Thanks for all the help to get to this stage Tracy Pain TP Equine Therapy and gill Jolleys ! Here’s to our next chapter
