Everybody has goals … some are very different to others . Some is just to sit on the horse and be comfortable, some is to turn up and do a dressage competition no matter the placing . Some is to have a bond an upstanding with your horse that it doesn’t walk all over you of pull your arms out of your sockets.
Others is to turn up to a show without spending hours trying to load a horse .
Others is for there horse to stay sound all year long and to just ride them out is a win.
Coaches need to stop seeing goals as high level winning !
The riders that have little goals and complete them with support in a calm understanding manner while enjoying their hobbie will get a lot further and carry on riding for a lot longer .
❤️They will understand what they are doing and why they are doing it . ❤️They will learn so much more and become supportive of others in a very hard sport .
Little goals lead to a long term enjoyable success 💪

Famous line for equestrians ‘ it wasn’t the horses fault ‘

We fall off ,we get kicked , we get stood on and we all say it wasn’t their fault !

And we are right …. Naturally horses walk about all day grazing in herds .

We come along we separate them , put then In enclosures , over feed then then have to diet them . We dress them up is stupid matcha matchy that does nothing but sits of pressure points. We sit of them kick them in the ribs smack them when they tell us no . But then in metal boxes that move when they have no idea where they are going and THEH JUST COPE WITH IT .
But most of the time when things go wrong it’s the rider .
They are over weight ? We are in charge of what they eat
They are scared ? We are forcing them to do things they don’t understand
They aren’t straight ? Are we riding them straight ? Is the rider straight
They are lame ? Have we over worked them
Sore back ? Is the tack right or are we to heavy for our horses ?

Sometimes we need straighten up ourself and do body work on ourselves just as much as them.
We need to balance our diet and get in shape ourselves .
We need to be trained how to ride properly and how to work with horses.
Our horses behaviour is s reflection and on us . Are we alway rushing and therefore not giving them to time to think about stuff and understand and instead just whipping them into the trailer ?
Is it our fustration that is put into them .
Are we frightened so so are they.
Have you taught them manners the same way you would teach a child ?

They didn’t ask to be our pets so we should listen to them and ask ourselves what we are doing wrong not them 🙂

This is lily have her physio today … when a horse has a big release they have a big yawn !
She had lots of tension round her head .
Most of you know this is my mare that had a beautiful challenge foal last year .
In the last 12 weeks she had started coming back into work.
She was quite thin , no muscle and lacking in energy due to being a great mothering and putting all her energy in a big foal.
So we left her 4 weeks to just be a horse , relax wind down after being a fab mother.
We started her new diet of of pink mash which has all the nutrition in without any rubbish (like us eating tofu chicken and veg very good for us but not as tasty as a McDonald’s so takes a while to get used to it ) and a vitamin e supplement .
We started long reining on the hilly roads which helps buildup top line and strengthen core. the roads are great to get the horses walking in forward straight lines.
We have also been doing in hand work over poles to build up core muscle.
While we have been doing this we have been on a plan with my great physio Tracey starting every week now every 2 weeks to help build her muscle up evenly and release any tension and her body changes from mum bod to athelete.
Then 2 weeks ago her behaviour changed and she stopped wanting the bridle on or head collar most people would have said it was just behavioural and she wasn’t wanting to work … but we have to listen to our horses when they try telling us something .
So I have her teeth rechecked ( only done 2 months ago ) and she had 2 mobile wolf teeth which were causing her pain. these have been removed.
This week due to not being able to use the bridle yet we have been desensatising to the saddle walking round the yard with gill leading me on her and she has been very relaxed. Next week we will be starting hacking .
It’s so important that horses coming back into work we treat them from stretch again : nutrition , body work , ground work , mentally , checking tack and desensitisation . And also slowly give them time to fitten up and find their feet as a working horse. Thanks for all the help to get to this stage Tracy Pain TP Equine Therapy and gill Jolleys ! Here’s to our next chapter

Lily having her physio . Her reaction to the releases are her yawning.
It’s so important that we release all the tension that accumulates when we work our horses.
They are atheletes , their body’s are finally tuned.
How can we expect them to be collected if they cannot go straight and flex properly ?
How can we expect them to go straight and flex if there muscles are not even or tense ? … we can’t .
Muscle development is rarely even so good physio regularly helps the body develop evenly .

The importance of feedback
Feedback after a completion isn’t just that was great or do better next time .
As a coach rider team you have to have an objective ; what are you getting out of that outing.
For us doing a clear round was about technique : straight lines into fences and making good turns to set her up for the fence.
At the end we discussed if we met that objective … yes we did !! she did two very lovely controlled rounds .
Then we chatted about what could be better next time. So in the second round the last pole was knocked . So we will work on checking striding and picking his legs up better.
The discussion was both ways abbi told me what went well and what she felt she struggled with.
Talking gives you direction and something to work towards.
It’s a partnership you have to listen as much as you give advice 👍

Massive well done to abbi Claire Cornthwaite placing in her first show jumping competition. After only starting to learn to jump 6 months ago has come on leaps and bounds. She has put in so much work and determination!
