Ever wondered why the Medical Car follows the first lap of every race? 👀🏁

There’s a good reason for it.

The first lap is one of the points where incidents are most likely, with a tightly packed field, cold tyres and brakes, and drivers all fighting for position.

So for that opening lap, the Medical Car is already moving with the race, carrying two doctors and a Critical Care Paramedic, and driven by a racing driver.

If something happens, they are already out on circuit and can be at an incident within seconds.

Once that first lap is complete, the car returns to its standby position, ready to deploy again if needed.

Another small part of the safety operation that most people watching the racing never really see.

A little bit of controlled chaos at Croft Circuit today… 😬

We used some of the quieter track time for a joint training exercise with the local circuit rescue teams, putting everyone through a realistic incident response scenario.

And because nobody is allowed to stand around doing nothing, our helicopter pilot and research engineer were volunteered as casualties. They may be reconsidering their job descriptions. 😂

Exercises like this give us the chance to test how the different teams work together, from the initial response and scene management through to casualty assessment, treatment and recovery. It also helps us identify the little things we can improve before we ever need to do it for real.

Training together matters. Different people, different vehicles, different equipment, but when something happens on circuit we need to operate as one team.

Huge thanks to everyone who got involved, including our exceptionally convincing casualties! 🚑🏁

RACE WEEK IS HERE 🤩🏁

We’re heading to Croft Circuit for the next round of the BTCC... and for the TOCA Safety Team the weekend starts tomorrow morning.

Friday is our chance to get everything ready, with testing, preparation and training before the racing gets underway.

We’ll be checking the vehicles and equipment, running through procedures and getting some practical training in. Where we can, we’ll also spend time with the cars, teams and drivers, so everyone knows what to expect if we ever need to work together for real.

And Croft gives us plenty to think about. In just over 2 miles, the circuit packs in 16 turns, from the fast, flowing Jim Clark Esses to the much tighter Hairpin. Different parts of the circuit can mean very different incidents, so understanding the track and being prepared for what might happen where is all part of the job.

Then it’s into race mode for Saturday and Sunday, with the team ready throughout the BTCC and support-race programme.

There’s always a lot going on behind the scenes before the first race starts, and we’ll hopefully share a bit of it with you over the weekend.

If you’re at Croft, give us a wave 👋

The best way to prepare for a serious incident is to practice before one ever happens. Friday afternoon gave the TOCA Safety Team a valuable opportunity to carry out multiple driver extrication scenarios with Porsche Carrera Cup GB driver Will Jenkins.

Practising in the drivers’ own cars, alongside their teams, helps us refine our techniques and understand the challenges presented by different cars and seating positions. It also ensures drivers know what to expect if extrication is ever required, while giving teams a clear understanding of how we would manage a serious incident.

Hopefully it is something Will will never need outside training, but these sessions are incredibly valuable for everyone involved.

Although, judging by some of the photos, Will appears to be enjoying being extricated slightly more than he probably should… 😂

A big thank you to Will and the team for their time and support 🏁🚑

Behind the scenes with the TOCA Safety Team at Knockhill Racing Circuit…

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes of a BTCC weekend that most people never get to see.

Our day started early this morning with a practical extrication exercise using a Caterham Seven car, giving the medical and rescue crews the opportunity to get hands-on with the car and practice how we would safely access and extricate a driver following an incident.

It’s why we train before the racing even starts. When something happens on track, there isn’t time to start working things out. Preparation, familiarity with the cars and teamwork all make a difference.

And once the track goes live, technology gives us another huge advantage.

Both the TOCA Medical Car and Incident Command Pickup have access to the live feeds from ITV’s cameras around the circuit.

That gives our medical and incident response teams eyes around virtually the whole track.

If something happens, we can often watch the incident as it unfolds, see the impact, where the car has come to rest and what is happening around it, sometimes from several different camera angles.

It means that while the crews are already responding, we’re building a picture of what we’re heading towards.

From hands-on extrication training first thing in the morning to live camera feeds, radio communications and teams positioned around the circuit throughout the day, there’s a huge amount going on behind the scenes to keep a BTCC weekend running safely.

Hopefully, most of it is never needed. But if it is, we’re ready.
