Osu! Training has now started to focus on the summer grading at the end of this month. The path to improving one’s kumite lies in gaining complete control over the body and being able to move freely at will. This is cultivated through every aspect of training-kihon, ido, kata, combinations, mitt work, and yakusoku kumite. Use your limited time wisely and train hard. Osu!

Osu! London has been experiencing summer-like temperatures of 30–35°C for the past few weeks. With that in mind, last weekend’s training deliberately focused on conditioning exercises. Inspired by Tohyama Sensei’s words, “Senseless incidents and unnecessary violence only occur under unpleasant circumstances. The most important form of self-defense is to cultivate a strong mind that can make the right decisions under any conditions,” every dojo student remained focused and committed throughout the demanding training session until the very end. When you feel exhausted, push yourself just a little further. Then do it again. By repeating this process, continue striving to become stronger both mentally and physically. Osu!

Osu! We couldn’t slack off like the saying “When the cat’s away the mice will play,” so to surprise Tohyama Sensei-who is returning next week-the kids’ class focused on kihon and kata, whilst the adults’ class additionally trained with pads to sharpen techniques. Whether Tohyama Sensei will offer words of praise or a stern reprimand to try harder, everyone put in hard training at home to surprise Tohyama Sense‼️Osu‼️

Osu! The kids’ class practiced maintaining the correct posture during strength training, while the adult class focused on footwork. Training is becoming able to do what you previously couldn’t do. Satisfaction of seeing improvement as a result of your hard work is what makes learning karate so enjoyable. Keep training constantly without giving up! Osu!

Osu! The theme of this week’s training was ‘punching while circling into your opponent’. If your feet stop when attacking or defending, you’ll be slow to make the next move. Karate movements involve three or four actions simultaneously. As a start, always maintain a relaxed state and try to react quickly to your opponent. Osu!

Osu! Today’s training focused mainly on kata. Practising kata with focus and repeating over and over leads to many new insights. Don’t become overconfident just because you think you know the moves. Keep repeating and try to move more smoothly and powerfully from a lower stance. Osu!

Osu! This week’s training focused on kumite. The focus is not stopping your feet when blocking, and moving sideways around your opponent in response to their attack. Both the kids and adult class students found this quite difficult, but it is absolutely essential that you keep trying without giving up until you get it right. Correctly judge the situation before acting, maintain your stance and posture, and move at the right distance and timing. There’s a lot to do, but keep working hard, clearing each step one by one, until you can perform good kumite. Osu!

Osu! Kazuki, who has been training with us for the past five years, is leaving the dojo as he returns to Japan. On Saturday, the day before he left London, he took part in the final training session with fellow dojo students he had worked hard with over the years. After kihon and strength training, we had a longer sparring session than usual. His final sparring was with Tohyama Sensei. With no time limit, and spurred on by Tohyama Sensei’s encouragement to ‘Punch harder! Kick harder! Give everything you’ve got!’, he gave it his all. To send Kazuki off, we executed the closing seiken chudan zuki and chudan maegeri with twice the usual kiai and passion. If you keep training karate, we’re bound to meet again somewhere. By the time we meet again, let’s be even stronger. Do your best in Japan, Kazuki‼️ Osu!
