Recent studies show that dopamine is not just a feel good hormone.
Dopamine is traditionally known as a feel good hormone and also linked to attention, memory & mood due to this role.
Recent studies show it is also elevated during stressful situations which implies a role in how we manage stress.
To be honest this was a shock to me; not because I'm surprised it is, but because I'm surprised this is new. It is something I've long assumed to be true but obviously have not looked for confirmation in the literature just because I personally thought it was obviously linked.

You see dopamine is a catecholamine and is altered to become adrenaline. This link makes it seem likely there would be a connection to stress.

But what does it mean for you?

In short dopamine disregulation/resistance from altered dopamine signalling can have large implications on food selection, memory, motivation and general mood.

High stress also has a strong effect on these things, possibly dopamine is part of thst mechanism.

This may be why many of these symptoms improve when taking supplements that improve dopamine regulation such as Ashwagandha.

That said its always a good idea to check first what's going on in your personal situation via objective tests.

Why some times you just have to eat steak for breakfast!

Now of course it does not have to be a steak but recent research has shined new light on the importance of what time of day your protein is consumed.

As muscle protein synthesis (MPS) is 50% higher during the day than at night it make sense that mice and humans who consumed more protein earlier in the day had better muscle growth than those that broke their fast layer in the day.

Now there are too many offshoots to what this statement means as a whole to cover in detail but here is a summary.

Eating 20-30g of a protein source that is solid (not a shake, smoothy or anything liquid), will have the following benefits
Increased muscle growth Increased chance of fat loss Increased cognition
Improved digestive cascades through the day Improved circadian clock regulation Improved mood regulation Improved glucose regulation Reduced inflammation Reduced hunger

Protein is the primary building block our body uses not just to build muscle but to fuel immune responses, neurological communication, digestive response among many others.

My advice is throw out the old idea that a food or meal belongs at a time of day etc and expand your choices at breakfast.

Oh and for those that struggle with breakfast, that is a major sign of hypochloridryia (poor acid production). I suggest you look in to why.

When somebody asks why is melatonin important its hard to relay mainly because there are so many reasons that involve very precise mechanisms.

For many it is just the sleep hormone but to pigeon hole melatonin like this is honestly short sighted.

Melatonin is fundamentally one of the most important regulators of the immune system and oxidative stress.

It also regulates angiogensis very well (the creation/destruction of blood vessels) which is related to many disease States.

For these very reasons captioned and written above hacking and supplementing melatonin is one of my top priorities when improving the health of an individual.

This wonderful little acid captioned has been shown to have an amazing property.

While it may influence what it says in the picture here it will not do any of that unless paired with the right habits that drive them.

What it has been shown to do is prevent *monocyte priming*

Why is that important?

Well monocytes priming is what occurs when they are exposed to high levels of glucose and LDL.

This makes them more inflammatory and drives processes like atherosclerosis and hyperplasia in adipocytes (abnormal growth).

Those wanting to augment there choices around reversing conditions that are related to high blood glucose and or LDL, would do well to add this to their supplement support.

As the priming of monocytes also further drives (positive feedback loop) the increase of blood glucose & LDL levels in the blood via inflammatory signaling.

Ofcourse testing to see if one or more of the following are true for you would improve the confidence that this is right for you.

ELEVATED
Monocytes
LDL
Fasting glucose
HbA1c
Fasting TRIG

The amount or type of fat you eat is irrelevant without understanding your prostaglandin pathway (PG).
Many will claim some specific dietary plan is superior based it having a type or amount of a nutrient.
Unfortunately it's not so simple that we all just need to follow one set of rules, we have all lived different lives to get us to this piont in life so what we need to solve what ever issue is infrastructure of us is unique.

By looking at one pathway as shown above its easy to see the complexity and interconnectivity nutrients will have on each other, to find your answers you must be more specific or rely on luck or trail and error.

Test Don't Guess

By looking at your lipid profile you can gain key insights into the direction you need to nudge your PG pathway to optimise inflammatory pathways.

Many will order organic acid tests but fail to really understand the importance of the kreb cycle metabolites.
One important finding you may see is monocyte/macrophage shifts.
The shift to a more inflammatory systemic response by immune cells is directly related to obesity, diabetes and much more.
Itaconate is a key anti-inflammatory metabolite related to the conversion of citrate to cis-aconitate.
A build up of citrate and succinate and or a depletion of aconitic acid and fumaric acid can be a key sign of immune cell disregulation .

Its tough to get a good insightful interpretation of a test, so while ordering the test is the first step, many still end up guessing as to what they need or missing key facts if they don't get the right help.
