Just a few decades ago, legal access to medical cannabis was limited to a handful of countries.

Today, more than 50 countries have introduced medical cannabis programmes, giving millions of patients access to cannabis-based medicines under the supervision of healthcare professionals.

From Canada and the Netherlands in the early 2000s to the UK, Australia, Germany, Portugal, Thailand, Brazil and many others, the global shift towards medical cannabis continues to grow.

While laws, qualifying conditions and access pathways differ from country to country, one trend is clear:

Cannabis is being studied—and in some cases prescribed—for a range of medical conditions.

Current evidence is strongest for: 🌿 Chronic neuropathic pain 🌿 Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting 🌿 Spasticity associated with conditions such as multiple sclerosis

Research is also ongoing into its potential role in anxiety, insomnia, arthritis-related symptoms, and other neurological conditions, which continues to evolve.

The science is still developing, but one thing is clear: cannabis is now a serious area of medical research worldwide.

🍄 The First Prescription Psychedelic Era Is Coming

For decades, psychedelic medicines sat on the fringes of healthcare. Today, they are moving closer to the mainstream.

Researchers are now conducting late-stage clinical trials investigating psilocybin-assisted therapy for conditions including treatment-resistant depression, PTSD and addiction. While regulators have not yet broadly approved psilocybin as a prescription medicine, many experts believe the next few years could mark the beginning of a new chapter in mental healthcare.

Why the excitement?

A recent case report from Brazil described an 80-year-old woman with advanced Alzheimer’s disease who had been largely unable to communicate for years. Following a psilocybin intervention, researchers reported that she began speaking, recalling memories and engaging with family members in ways that had not been seen for a long time.

Importantly, this was a single case report, not a clinical trial, and much more research is needed before any conclusions can be drawn.

However, alongside a growing body of evidence showing potential benefits of psilocybin for depression and other mental health conditions, stories like these are helping drive scientific interest in psychedelic medicine.

The future of psychedelic healthcare will depend on rigorous science, patient safety and regulation—not hype.

But after decades of research barriers, the prescription psychedelic era may finally be approaching.

Today, that experience is becoming increasingly rare.

Scientists have documented significant declines in insect populations across many parts of the world. While the causes are complex and vary by region, habitat loss, pesticide use, pollution, climate change and intensive agriculture are all thought to play a role.

It might seem like a small thing, but insects sit at the foundation of many ecosystems. They pollinate crops, recycle nutrients and provide food for birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

Sometimes the biggest changes happen so gradually that we barely notice them. 🌍

🇬🇧 Medical cannabis has been legal in the UK since November 2018, yet awareness remains surprisingly low.

Many people are still unaware that specialist doctors can legally prescribe cannabis-based medicines for certain conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety disorders, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis-related spasticity, and chemotherapy-induced nausea where clinically appropriate.

🇨🇦 Parkinson’s Disease & Medical Cannabis

Canadian healthcare professionals continue to explore the role of medical cannabis in helping manage symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease.

Emerging research and patient reports suggest cannabinoids may help improve symptoms such as pain, sleep disturbances, anxiety, muscle rigidity and overall quality of life in some individuals living with Parkinson’s.

While more large-scale clinical studies are needed, researchers around the world continue to investigate the therapeutic potential of cannabis-based medicines for neurological conditions.

Importantly, medical cannabis is not considered a cure for Parkinson’s disease. However, growing evidence suggests it may offer meaningful symptom relief for certain patients when used under appropriate medical supervision.

As research expands and access improves, cannabis-based medicines could become an increasingly important part of the conversation around patient-centred neurological care.

Two years after Germany shook Europe by decriminalising personal cannabis use, many people are asking: where are the licensed retail dispensaries?

We’re breaking down the latest developments surrounding Pillar 2—the proposed framework for commercial regional pilot projects.

🛑 The Current Status: As of mid-2026, no federally approved commercial cannabis retail programme has launched in Germany. While numerous municipalities—including Berlin, Frankfurt and Hanover—have explored participation in Pillar 2 pilot projects, recreational cannabis sales through licensed retail outlets remain unavailable.

⚖️ The Political Gridlock: Following recent political changes, a more conservative policy environment has slowed federal movement on Pillar 2. Opposition within parts of government continues to challenge proposals for commercial cannabis sales.

🌱 What Is Legal Right Now? While adults still cannot purchase recreational cannabis from retail dispensaries, the core provisions of Germany’s cannabis law remain in force. Adults can legally grow up to 3 plants at home, possess up to 25g in public, up
to 50g at home and access cannabis through registered, non-profit Cannabis Social Clubs.

🌍 The Broader Impact: While recreational retail remains stalled, Germany’s medical cannabis market continues to expand rapidly, with patient numbers, prescribing activity, and product availability all increasing.
